I really do feel they should've held off on renaming it ITV1 until they'd ditched the regional logos. That Granada continuity shows just how much of a botch job it was. They must've known by that time that Granada and the other identities would soon be gone and may as well have waited really.

Such a shame. The management at the time were too obsessed with 'a single ITV'.

does anybody think that dropping the 1 from itv1 is actually a mistake and within in a couple of years it will be reversed?

it takes a long, long, long time for a brand to become part of everyday vernacular and prior to itv1, most people knew "channel 3" as "3" or "insert regional name here". until the early 2000s, itv was hardly ever known as itv on screen in many regions. certainly on anglia it wasn't. you only ever really saw itv trails during night time... it's a brand so strong that a fair few older people I know still refer to itv1 as "anglia".

so if itv had stuck with itv1 it would have eventually rolled off the tongue with no less difficulty than bbc1 does today. it might take 10 more years but it would eventually sink in.

and really, having a channel portfolio itv, itv2,itv3,itv4 does look a bit messy.

but, in the end and unfortunately for itv... you can't polish a turd. they could even slap a new logo on the bbc 1 balloon and the channel would still be shi*e.

I'd have thought that was obvious. BBC One all day share in 2012 - 21.3%. ITV1 (incl +1) - 15.7%. Peaktime share for BBC One - 23.5%. ITV1 Peaktime share 20.6%.

I do think it's a mistake, but doubt it will be reversed in future.

I'm going to bet that it will. Like how they ditched the bold relaunched News At Ten look a mere couple of years back, they'll end up reintroducing ITV1 for the sake of "brand realignment".

I hated the change to ITV1 at the time but that's because I saw it as yet further undermining of the regional identity and with only ITV2 as a main sister channel, I felt it wasn't really necessary. Now that there's an ITV3 & 4 and with the regional identities consigned to the dustbin of history, it is the removal of the '1' that now feels unnecessary.

I agree that it's a mistake, as we seem to have reached a point now where the majority of people are calling it ITV1 (both on and off screen), and fewer people are calling it ITV, and I expect that people will still continue to call it ITV1 for years after the rebrand.

It was a mistake to call it ITV1 in the first place, I dare say the 1 been taking off to keep STV and UTV happy.

I don't think it's a mistake. In fact, I'd say anything does change in future it's more likely to be the multichannels' identities.

Agreed. I think ITV just needed to be a bit more patient because eventually we would have reached a point where everybody calls it ITV1. I'm sure the BBC faced similar issues when BBC2 launched and they renamed the BBC Television Service 'BBC1'. Sometimes you've just got to see things through and hold your nerve ... something which ITV is particularly bad at doing.
