Couldn't find any application for Meridian but I suppose they're in a business park so it'll be park signage only. As for the font, I personally can't tell any difference between old and new. I think I'll wait until next week before I pass judgement, not that my opinion matters that much.

EDIT: I don't suppose that the font on this glass (from Meridian's new (Nov 2011) home) is the new font is it?

Don't penalize me for bringing it up but it was debated on the Meridian thread about the poor logo attempt and the font.

Definitely not.

It's all the 2005 ITV Font by fontsmith, just someone at Meridian thought the logo used it as well, instead the logo was just drawn by Fontsmith!

The most epic, and beautiful version of News At Ten.

Which also just happened to coincide with an increase in viewing figures. Obviously matching ITV1s ghastly colour scheme was considered more important. Thankfully it will be gone in a week.

The most epic, and beautiful version of News At Ten.

The current version is the WORST in its history. A badly animated fly through poorly rendered blocks of STATIC images, which is particlarly appalling when you consider Channel 4 News managed to incorporate moving images into its titles more than 10 years ago.

Why are still images appaling? The speed of the titles would mean moving images would be a terrible idea?

I don't think that set has aged well, and some members are looking at it as if it's some work of art. The blue gradient around the pedestal is naff, and the backdrop is just a nice photo of London. It's not groundbreaking, nor is it art.

The speed of the descent wouldnt make a difference. You would see the images, still or otherwise.

The titles are a terrible idea full stop. I've seen far better AE templates you can buy off the shelf. No matter how many times I see the titles, I still cant believe they are being used. It's a glorified powerpoint presentation.

This is how you create titles that incorporate the day's events:

It looks a hell of a lot easier on the eye than a dingy, damp-looking environment filled with an illogical collection of random rectangles and squares, scrambled clockfaces, and a flooring that resembles an underground car park of the nearest Morrisons.

Yep, that's real art. Groundbreaking and classy. Rolling Eyes

Moving images with a camera moving in a different direction is not a good idea at that speed. The Channel 4 News example you posted is a lot slower.

I don't understand how changing from still images to moving images would transform the titles from "a glorified [PowerPoint] presentation" into some jizztastic piece of art.

Quite why ITV News/the colour yellow makes you so angry, I've no idea.

Did I ever say the current one was art? Whataday was the one that claimed that particular News at Ten set was "epic" and "beautiful". I think the current one is modern and functional - not without its faults, but different to any other news set in use.

The next time you see a Morrisons with an underground car park and a shiny floor, kindly post it on here.

I think the nice manner in which the London background tracked in a 3D manner with the camera made that set. It's all in the movement with ITV.

Virtual sets have had their day IMHO.

The fly through the images is so rigid and angular, rather than flying through. Whilst not transforming the titles, moving images would add more depth and display a lot more skill.

I'm not sure how you got the impression that I was angry, although it is quite obscene that there are so many great designers out there and theyre using that nonsense. The 3D effects and lighting look so fake. The lighting rigs used to illuminate each image look less realistic than the virtual rig used 20 years ago for BBC News.

Thankfully this time next week they'll be gone forever.

No you didn't, but that's what it came across as - that the current set is groundbreaking and an example of good art. I apologise if that's not what you meant. I think this set is an overly-complicated mess of shapes, a far cry from the simplicity and modernity of what came before it. I agree that the NAT set was epic. It was not a "revolutionary" set design, but it didn't need to be. It was clean, slick and professional, and that's "modern" enough for me. Then again we're all entitled to our own opinions... and at least for once we've been bickering over presentation rather than newsreader shifts. Shocked

Will do. My nearest Morrisons does indeed have a large car park underneath it, that's why I mentioned it... looks just like the floor of the ITV News studio - sans shiny texture of course. One for Metropol, I think. (I'll stop it now before I'm officially warned!)

In a desperate attempt to bring this thread back on topic - assuming 14th January is indeed launch day, will there be any promotion or trailer to signify the move back to simply "ITV", or will it all come in silently on Monday morning? I'm quite astonished how a lot of stuff has been kept under wraps so far, makes a change really.
