I have a soft spot for the channel logos they introduced in 2004 - the original ITV3 logo in particular was very nice, and they worked really well in terms of cross-promotion which the subsequent logos have never really been able to match. I don't think the corporate logo had particularly aged either - it was very distinctive and in that sense it's a shame they decided to get rid when they did.

I agree. I've watched a few YouTube videos of the 2004 ITV1 look and it was very simple, nice and clear. Pleasant music and if they had made more use of the video promotions for the idents, the look could have lasted a lot longer.
Definitely - there were never meant for the current logo, let alone the new one! They were designed for the 2004 package, and only got a typeface and logo update in 2006.

I agree, Chris.
It was a clear design: it kept the new identity of ITV after the merger, but got rid of those AWFUL celeb idents.
The new idents don't have to be long or complicated (TSW, Central. LWT), but something WOULD be nice, rather than a curly-logo slapped on some arty footage.
I have always been a fan of CGI idents. I think my IBA Yearbooks (which are in the loft) suggests that Grampian were the first to use CGI. Am I right?
Channel 4 should probably take that accolade, with their November 1982 launch package.
Central introduced the cake at some point in 1987, the same year Grampian introduced their CGI logo - perhaps barcode can clarify things with his independent research.
EDIT: It appears the Central cake was in full use by 1986.

Central's first CGI Idents were the second generation moon ident; 1983, a year after C4 and made by ElectricImage of London
So do we have a hard date for the relaunch? ITV1 is into it's Christmas presentation now, so will we see a brief reprieve of the old look before the change, or will January 2nd be the launch day?
I know there will be changes to ITV News (@MattJF of ITN tweeted about working on new shots today, and that a lot of progress had been made), but what of ITV Sport? They've only just had a revamp for their football coverage (at the Euros). I guess they will finally have to ditch the 2006 house style which I saw on the Darts at the weekend, and they still use on their cycling coverage.
