It really is bizarre because I thought the current logo was futher dumbing down of the station when I first saw it but now that I know what's replacing it, it looks positively highbrow.

For 'highbrow' read boring, non-descript. It lacks identity.

BBC Scotland logo lacks identity and so does BBC Northern Ireland.

But nothing can ever beat the BBC North West 'bonking worms' for any sort of identity!

They cancelled Afterlife - a show I loved! - in order to schedule more Britain's Got Talent. I am still sore about it.

What a stupid statement - I thought you were brighter than that mdta. You're basically saying they cancelled a show (that aired in the autumn) for "more" episodes of a show that hadn't even launched here when Afterlife ended. Ultimately it was axed because the lead actor quit, so appreciate a show that ended in it's prime rather than withered on for a series or two too many.

Actually there was plans for a third series, where the male lead would act as a spirit guide to the female lead, and would help her reclaim her life. But the comments at the time mentioned making space for more talent shows. It may not have been Britain's Got Talent, but I don't watch that crap so sorry if I got the name of the show wrong.

"sad news for fans of the superior supernatural show, Afterlife. After two series ITV has decided there will be no more, preferring to focus on bigger rating draws such as recent hit Britains Got Talent".

Ferguson added: "I think the end of the second series was quite a neat ending but it was by no means seen as a conclusion of the series."

hmm, I think BBC Scotland is a far stronger identity than the bonking worms, which were probably only known within their region or the BBC as an identity, much like the Pebble Mill plughole!

The more I see the new logo the more I like it

I am desperate to see the logos for ITV News, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, CITV and ITV Sport.

What, like the BBC logo: three blocks with letters in them? It does the job and has lasted for years.

It does seem that garish/tacky are in fashion at the moment; certainly taking note of the London 2012 logo. I'm guessing that when they change the logo yet again in a few years time, few will admit ever having liked it, kind of like the seventies.

I suppose the difference is that the BBC covers many areas other than television, and all of the TV brands have seperated away from the 1997 layout and adapted their brandings & channel logos to become completely different to each other.

The BBC Blocks are a simple enough design that they can be placed easily into many different designs.
ITV don't take this approach, and stick to similar branding for their channels. I suppose they could have tried to keep the current basic logo akin to ITV Studios, and experiment with unique channel brands.

... an aside, have just skimmed Ofcom's response to the Channel 3 Networking arrangements document released today, and note that Channel Tellevision is still the licensee for the Channel Islands, albeit owned by ITV plc. It has not yet been subsumed into ITV Broadcasting Limited, the holder of the other 11 licenses that ITV plc control.

I wonder if that's so they can continue to use the compliance loophole which keeps their fines down? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Television#Compliance_controversy

Edit: Oh no, ignore me, they changed the system - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/10/itv-compliance-ofcom-fines

I wonder if Channel's name will disappear when the idents change? At the moment, the on air name is ITV1 Channel Television. But I won't be surprised to see their name join the 1 in the dustbin.

Probably a tax thing?

I know that in terms of regulation, Channel TV acts as the compiler for a lot of ITV's shows (such as the X Factor). This means that if OFCOM decide to levy a fine for a breach of regulations, ITV aren't hit as hard since they select their smallest region to handle it. Perhaps that's another reason why they've chosen to keep it separate?

I expect it will stay, in the same way that ITV1 Wales has its own identity for breakbumpers, idents before regional programmes and regional trailers. I believe this is because ITV has to maintain some sort of regional identity in Wales, and I expect the same will apply to Channel as well.
