The blue caption is generated at the transmitter when the feed disappears, which would make sense if the power cut on the South Bank (assuming they are still played out from there and not Chiswick).

It may not be power problems, it's just a quick explanation as to how the all the channels cut and then taking such a long time to get any form of slide up, especially as ITV2 still seems to be having problems in the form of an incorrectly placed DOG.

I see what you mean, yes.

It's not necessarily power that will take everything down like that, something as mundane as losing air conditioning in a certain area can cause all sorts of things to fall over. This is what happened when BBC Radio failed over most of the country last summer

If there was a misplaced ITV2 dog but the pictures were ok, then the logo gen had probably lost it's sync - probably the least of their worries at the time

A contributor on the MHP mailing list says that Arquiva has informed him that the problems were caused by an interruption to the power supply at the Southern Transmission Centre in London.

Yes, a major power failure with no warning given to the staff. Part of GMTV was affected, with a caption with something such as 'programmes will continue shortly' on screen.

A power spike which killed the UPS, apparently, so lots of kit needed to be reset. One of those sod's law situations I guess

Over on the DS Forum, user 'twistedboycey' posted the following:

"Having read mst of your comments about last nights outage, it's clear that most of you don't actually have a clue. I was the TC for the ITV digital channels (2/3/4) working last night. This was the worst outage suffered at LTC ever. The whole of the trasmission area lost power due to a power spike as the UPS was kicking in. The whole building lost power. The main CAR with all the main redundency went down. There was actually a bang and all the lights went off. The main problem was that everything in the transmission chain was spiked and had to be restarted. ITV1 takes Leeds as it's DR but this takes a while to put into place. But hey, atleast I managed to get nightscreen out on ITV4!! We all worked really hard last night just to get a very basic service out."

It's not a lot to look at, but here is ITV4 switching from nightscreen to the slide, going through all the slides in the process:

EDIT: It would appear the embedded video player hasn't been updated yet to support H.264, so here is the link to the video: http://www.orryverducci.co.uk/files/itv4offair.mp4

The video needs to be in flash (flv) to work in that player and your video is in mp4, so I think you're better off just posting the link to it instead! Smile

This is the problem with centralisation, if it goes bellies up, then the channels have had it, luckily at least with ITV, they have Leeds to save the day.

Was surprised to see the ITV Play slide still lingering about in the system.
