ITV to unveil rebrand
Colin Robertson
06 January 2006 07:59
ITV will next week unveil a radical overhaul of its on-screen branding in a bid to give each of its four channels a similar look.
The launch on Monday will see new logos for ITVs 1, 2 and 3 to bring them into line with ITV4, which launched on 1 November.
The network is ditching its distinctive gold and blue motif for a series of new coloured idents. For example, the main channel ITV1 will be a yellow and black design.
The new logos, which will be accompanied by a series of new idents, will launch on-screen on 16 January. BBC Broadcast, now called Red Bee Media, handled the redesign.

When ITV1 adopted the stacked logo, it was clear that SMG wouldn't really be able to adapt it, as having "tv" written huge underneath a small "scottish" or "grampian" would look ridiculous.
But, now that ITV1 is returning to a purely horizontal logo, SMG could finally abandon the current look.
Imagine this (but ignore the "DAY" bit)...

...but change the white writing to "scottish" or "grampian", the black writing to "tv", and possibly change the yellow to the SMG shade of blue. But keep the same font, proportions, rounded corners etc.
But I doubt SMG will bother.

Any news around on what Scottish/Grampian are doing? Nothing I assume.

Is that it from Broadcastnow - hardly an in depth report is it!!
It's odd they should say that this is a bid to give ITV's suite a channels a similar look - they had a similar look before!

LONDON – ITV is rebranding its channel logos to bring them into line with the new ITV4 logo, using the same design in a variety of colours.
ITV will unveil the new logos on Monday with the on-screen launch earmarked for January 16. It is expected ITV1 will adopt the same edgy design as ITV4 only with a colour scheme of black and yellow.
The redesign is part of dramatic overhaul to bring all ITV digital stations under one clear identity for the digital future. As it stands, ITV1, 2 and 3 still have the yellow and blue while ITV4 has an sharper looking logo with white, black and green.
The new logos were created by Red Bee Media, formerly known as BBC Broadcast.
Wonder why there is two logos...

What I found odd was that when I first heard of the revamp, the channels were to have individual or different looks. Now they're all going to be similar and colour-coded. How very organised!
I prefer the unique looks C4 gives it's channels. I think it is easier for a channel to create a unique look for itself when it doesn't have to conform to the same rules as every other channel from the same broadcaster, *breathe* and it also just generally seems to be more successful for each channel to have a bold personality of it's own that the viewer can easily distinguish from one another.
From what we've heard so far it all seems very BBC-like, an army of channels with colour-coded logos and different idents. I guess when the revamp was first mentioned, I was hoping for something a little special for each channel. But still, wait and see.

Presumably one is just the monochrome variant of the other for use when photocopied and in b/w newspaper ads and the like.
I guess they don't want people to make their own monochrome versions simply by desaturating the colour one as this would end up with the yellow all but disappearing and the white 'itv' becoming unreadable.

Yeah but why is there two colours for the logo? It's confusing.
EDIT: S4H just explained it.
I hope the logos aren't all placed bottom right a la ITV4 for the idents. Would be nice to see some diversity.
