I agree. It suited the channel's identity and the music was dramatic, It's one of the best of all time IMHO.

I personally think you can't beat the old Sky Premier ident. Even to this day when I see a clip of it, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. That's how TV should be!

I couldn't agree more with Asa's comments. What's happened to our TV channels? Most countries still have big, explosive idents. Remember what our station's identities used to be like in the late nineties? We had Sky corporate idents that were HUGE, a graceful BBC balloon flying over the country and regional ITV stations with huge logos like LWT and Scottish TV's silver thistle, which I would love to return!!

I notice that ITV are managing cross promotion between their 4 channels tonight (the first time I've noticed it) in a limted fashion.
On promos for next weeks football they simply put ITV4's logo first and add the "+ 2 + i " boxes after it. (horizontally across the bottom of the screen)
I think they have got round the different logo probs quite well really

I agree, I thought that they would encounter many problems. It still doesn't look right, but it's better than not cross promoting.
I personally think that they're missing a trick with the next strap.
They could easily have the 1 to 2 to 3 transitions as currently turning horizontally, and then have the 4 cubes turning vertically to reveal the ITV4 logo.
As for the multichannel menu on the ECP, I don't understand why they haven't simply added the 4 with the split part on the right under the other squares!

A nice article on today's MediaGuardian "The big TV channels are deep in an ident crisis"

And no, I'm not going to quote it!

A great article, but I disagree that the Balloon was unsuitable for certain programmes...

Like the one from 1993, the Sky Network had properly executed idents with each one having a unique and dramatic soundtrack, now it's just a load of rubbish particularly Sky One or pardon me it's Sky Onc these days isn't it.

Sky One use to have some nice stand out idents and whilst the Brimful of Asha era in 1998 was passable. It's been downhill from there. Sky One idents use to stand out, now it's more a whimper on screen.

Wake up everyone... news just in, hurrah! ITV News is getting a complete revamp from January 16. The studio and titles will be revamped to give them a "warmer" feel, though the blue will remain. The News at 10.30 will be renamed "Nightly News", and will be permanently anchored by Mark Austin in the wake of Trevor McDonald's leaving.
I'm guessing the Network rebrand will be on January 16, to coincide with these changes. ITV News is keeping the blue - so ITV1 will probably adopt the blue logo too, unlike the previously rumoured yellow look.

From a reliable source:
"The new ITV regional news titles are having their music tweaked only slightly, and will use a blue and gold colour scheme, with a hint of the green of the current ITV4 logo. Gone will be the terrible blocky map of GB in favour of curves & spotlights. Relaunch currently scheduled to happen on 16th January 2006."
