Here is HTV's explanation for it accidentally displaying a Carlton ident:

It is HTV
There are a number of centralised functions across the ITV1 network and in some cases a slip-up happens between programmes.

The hub of the whole network is in Birmingham.

Hope this resolves the matter

call me thick - but does that mean birmingham is the hub of carlton owned stations - the whole itv network or just htv, central and westcountry? i thought central continuity was based at nottingham - or are idents played out from birmingham

The transmission suite at Yorkshire Television in Leeds controls the output for all Granada owned stations (inc. Tyne Tees and Border). Most network programmes are broadcast from LNN (London News Network) which is distributed to all ITV companies, eg. Scottish, Ulster, Carlton. In Leeds, they run a guard copy of the programme as back-up should any problems occur with the LNN feed.

With live programmes, the system works in reverse – the feed is sent to LNN for distribution to the rest of the network.

Like Granada, I guess Carlton do have a central transmission centre – after all it saves money!

All Granada stations EXCEPT the main Granada Television region for the North West of England, they have their own output and transmission team (although sometimes if the programme is a network programme, then their will be a generic voiceover from wither Manchester or Leeds, with the region only displaying their local ident).

Granada does not have it's own transmission team. All continuity for Granada comes from Leeds. Border as well.

Anyway Meridian and Anglia are still separate.

Sorry, but the Granada TV Region continuity and the LWT continuity comes from their own offices. Granada's comes direct from an area in the Granada News Center in Manchester.

Hmmm, well I have to say then that it is a quite grotesque waste of money then. When I was in Granadaland (and could receive YTV as well) the trailers were all the same, the timing was all the same and the voice-overs were all the same. If you are telling me that this is all done separately then I say that someone at Granada Television wants to be rounded up and shot for wasting so much money!!!!!

I said before, most network programs DO have the same voiceover, this either comes from Manchester or Leeds. The only difference is the ident used locally. When there are regional or timeshifted programmes, announcers at Leeds and Machester are used respectively for the regions. The reason you probably heard the voiceovers at the same time on the different regions is because it was a network programme. So they are saving SOME money. Very Happy

Local programming, eg the news had the same voice-over as well. This was over several days, and not once when I checked was there any difference.

I happen to know for a fact that Tyne Tees, Border and YTV are all using the same announcer, at all times. The Granada announcer also appears to be the same. What you are saying is despite spending an absolute fortune upgrading Leeds so they can deal with 4 channels, Granada still has its own part-time continuity suite that plays the ident tape out itself (despite the fact that YTV can do that for them) and have the odd individual announcement (despite the fact that YTV can do all that too). So does Granada have different annos from one programme to the next then?!?!? And what is the point in employing two lots of announcers if one of them is twiddling his thumbs 95% of the time?

I'd LOVE to know Granada's excuse for this stupid mess!!
