UTV's weather forecasts were sponsored by Legal & General in 1991-1992.

I'm sure nearly all Regions got the Legal & General sponsorship, from looking on the Net I haven't seen one for Thames Television, Channel Television or HTV, but otherwise I've seen one for every other Region, it's worth checking on YouTube. Laughing

Most Regions stopped after 1993, although Granada kept theirs until later on in 1994 I believe, then by 1995 First Choice Holidays were the new sponsor, at the same time Carlton Weather also had FCH for some reason too.

LWT had First Choice as well, I remember on two seperate occasions that LWT didn't have a sponsor so you got a wether vein spinning showing spring, summer, autumn & winter with St Paul's in the background, it had a quiet little tune as well, sorry I can't describe it better than that.

So, can no one think of anything interesting to talk about?

I remember that Granada were sponsorless for a couple of months in 1995, just after they relaunched (this was when the Dark blue G Arrow conept was introduced) and for the Weather it was a simple caption with Granada Weather at the bottom and a still of what looked like a part of the Lake District with a very cheesy tune to go with it, but as I said it didn't last long.

YTV Weather was sponsored by Yorkshire Electricity from the mid 90s to around 2002

Since then it's been Yorkshire Water, Budget Insurance, Balsen, Carcraft, Yorkshire Building Society and now various Yorkshire theme parks, and various bits of no sponsor in between

never really understood why powergen would want to advertise to the consumer years before they entered the domestic supply market when they acquired east midlands electricity. i suppose it built the brand name, but it must have cost an awful lot with very little obvious return.

i absolutely hated the staybrite windows and conservatories (the clear choice ... whatever the weather) sponsorship of central weather - it went on for years - that bald window cleaner whistling then the truck driving off.

Ugh. I hated those. However it made the weather forcasts look like a top production.

'Today will be sunny, in the night, chance of some frost... bi-bye'

They arent exactly the most detailed forcasts in the world are they!

Indeed. When they first started sponsoring the weather they hadn't even been privatised, note on the 1989 clip a few pages back: 'a part of the CEGB'

Never understood why they sponsored the weather either, the other privatised bit of the CEGB; National Power were the sponsors of ITV's 1990 world cup coverage

I believe they were the first sponsor of an ITV "Programme"

They were the first sponsor of any programme in the UK.

I remember thinking it was very odd at the time

So, what's your favourite weather sting from 1993-1996? Mine would have to be the one that represented rain, where raindrops (or something similar) were splashing down into a pool. It was the most common one I saw during that era.

I also liked that one. It did seem to be shown more frequently than others. Speaking of that sequence, does anyone remember a similar one in which raindrops were falling onto a plant? I'm sure it was on the net somewhere (not youtube), though I can't seem to find it.

The rain one, taken from January 1995, check from 54 Seconds into the clip...

ITV National Weather, Rain (54 Seconds onwards) [end plug]

I agree I think it was the most used, I've got it from 1993 aswell on tape somewhere and it's appeared on one or two other clips on YouTube too.

If Zabalo hasn't changed his site, he had a different Opener, I think TVArchive has one too somewhere..
