They started in 1989, the same year the national weather forecasts began. Even though E-ON became their parent company, I believe the arrangement is that the PowerGen name is kept (despite the weather being "sponsored by E-ON, the power behind PowerGen").

does that make them the longest serving sponsor of any ITV programme?

I believe they were the first sponsor of an ITV "Programme"

I ought to check for the old sponsor sequences when I next have a rummage around for tapes, just in case.

They were good, the PowerGen logo in itself was quite memorable and then the Weather People, which folks have commented on here, was probably the peak. Everything since, not so good.

The Ice one was memorable, quite amusing with the tuba bit at the end of the music.

Do you mean the one featuring that "pom"-shaped thing? If so, that scared me often. I remember when it was repeated for days on end after the Lunchtime News - I always managed to spill food when that came on. Speaking of those sequences who remembers the "Wind" one? I can't seem to recall this one - but wasn't it relegated to after the News At Ten (i.e. after the watershed) because it scared children? At least that's what I read anyway.

Is that the one with the WeatherGen called Norwin and the creepy-sounding music?

I've never heard of that name ("Norwin"), but yes it was part of that WeatherGens series.

Indeed, they all had their own character names. The aforementioned pom-pom-like cold one was, aptly, called "Shivra"...

There were 12 in total but I can't recall what most of them looked like. Video of them does seem to be a bit lacking.

I think most did, add TVS & TSW to that list and I think HTV, Thames may have done but IIRC as soon as it was announced that Carlton won they dropped anything associated with ITV & although they were for regional weather forecasts I assume it was some special thing from the formation of the ITV Network

UTV's weather forecasts were sponsored by Legal & General in 1991-1992.

I'm sure nearly all Regions got the Legal & General sponsorship, from looking on the Net I haven't seen one for Thames Television, Channel Television or HTV, but otherwise I've seen one for every other Region, it's worth checking on YouTube. Laughing

Most Regions stopped after 1993, although Granada kept theirs until later on in 1994 I believe, then by 1995 First Choice Holidays were the new sponsor, at the same time Carlton Weather also had FCH for some reason too.

Now's your chance to see for yourself. (It's after the National Weather forecast)
