EDIT: originally a topic about the 1993 - 2001 "WeatherGens" stings - now changed to ITV National Weather general discussion

The ITV National Weather stings used during the 1990s have always fascinated me... I wonder how many versions there are actually are. I know that from around 1993 to 1996, the stings usually featured the PowerGen logo waving about in the wind, or rain falling, or a dog being blown around in the wind (a version also featured a rather scary looking man stamping his feet and shivering. That scared the hell out of me). However this period is a bit confusing for me... were these the only ones used between '93 and '96?

Of course we all know that the "WeatherGens" were introduced in 1996 and went straight up to 2001. This set of stings kept the green background colours but featured people dressed up to characterise weather (if thats how you could explain it). These included a woman with water spraying out of her head, waving an umbrella around ( Shocked ). That represented rain; another featured a rather scary looking girl dressed in a pom-pom suit defining ice/snow (that was another one that jump-started me during the late '90s).

There are clips of these lying around on YouTube/the Private Parts, but not that many. Like I said, that 1993-1996 period is a confusing one for me.. I can only recall seeing the ones I've already mentioned. Erm.. does anyone else have any recollections of this stings?

Your descriptions have triggered some fuzzy memories. I never actively looked out for them but I do remember, as designs go, they were quite interesting.

hah, I copied the dog in the wind one from a VHS tape recorded in the Central East area 1993 the other day. I thought the small remix of the 1989 ITV tune that played during it was pretty cool.

I'll dump it somewhere on the Internet when I get the chance

This era was always my favourite, sadly i've only managed to find these two - I remember a "misty" ident on Youtube but it seems to be gone:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cu79SeMnQQM
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CXRuP6T9nVw (about 8 minutes into the clip)

Although these are more recent, I can't believe I forgot about them:

Ah! those bring back memories, I liked how the 1989 tune was re-recorded for the early 90's stings, they woul dhave worked on the idents, had they had taken off and a second set had been created.

I remeber those last three well, especially the snowball/rain ones, saw those alot for obvious reasons Wink

The Simon Day ones were getting a bit repetative & were quite poor in comparison to those shown above but they were at least better than the EON ones which are the usual marketing gumph of putting images of the family in them to show they are "a family orientated company" Rolling Eyes Also, unfortunately, the great Powergen logo is no longer seen either Sad

In the last few years they've gone through a lot of unrememberable phases, I recall a poor one with a mobile phone ringing

These days a lot of weather sponsorship stings are based 100% on advertising the company rather than a decent weather related sting and the company only being mentioned at the end

Ah yes, somebody contacted me (putthetellyon) on YouTube asking about the ITV Weather stings from the 90s - was it you NickyYorks?

The 1989 weather sting is quite frankly rubbish but I can't stop watching it. Wasn't this the year ITV started doing national weather forecasts? Or was it just a revamp thing?

I think it was the first time they did a national forecast, I remember on either ITN News or London (Weekend) Tonight (if they still did the weekend variant in 1999) that Martin Davies, and the two other original presenters (don't know their surnames but they were Andrew & Trish) were celebrating 10 years of national weather forecasts on ITV

Speaking of ITV Weather, it needs a revamp now. The logo is just hideous and the graphics are very 'Paint' - or is it just me?

No it's not just you, even ITV London's (2004-is) and GMG, and Carlton ones were superior.

That's the names, I knew his name began with an A but always though it was Andrew. Where did they go afterwards? I remember Alex being on ITV weather longer than Trish Williamson
