I heard someone in the ITV1 thread mention that its a bad idea for each region to have an individual name as it can be confusing. I don't think it is because there's a sort of balance here - people know the name of their regional contractor and that they are ITV. I think its better than the American system which as far as I can gather is just stick the initials of the town before the name of the channel (I'm probably wrong though!) Anyway, my point is that people can identify with their regional station in a different light than an essentially national channel - look at the fuss over just the name Central going from the TV screens in comparison to BBC Birmingham shutting down its operations there (Again I could be wrong there!).

So this little point got me thinking that it would be pretty hard for any new applicants to think of new names for their region, so I want to challenge you all to think of the most names for all the regions, because I think soon we will have run out of names! Also, does anyone think that names of old could make a reappearance in future franchise rounds - could we see another Southern??

Here's my list with the most imaginative names for the regions:
Border: Lowlands and Cumbria TV
Scottish: Two Cities Television (it covers Edinburgh and Glasgow doesn't it?)
Channel: .Jersey & Guernsey TV
Central: Tri-City TV (Birmingham, Nottingham & Oxford)
Anglia: Flatland TV
London: SETV and Capital TV
Grampian: Highlands & Islands TV
Tyne Tees: Tyne-Northern TV
Granada: Mersey & Manchester TV
UTV: Belfast Broadcasting
Meridian: South Coast Broadcasting
Westcountry: Three Counties TV (Somerset, Devon & Cornwall)
HTV: Severn TV
Yorkshire: White Rose TV
GMTV: British Breakfast Broadcasting (Commonly known as Triple B)

Has anyone else got any ideas?

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granada already has too much emphasis on Manchester and Liverpool, so Mersey & Manchester TV would just make them even worse! Even Channel 3 North West would be better than that!

No offence, but those names aren't great, alternatives yeah but oh no. Tri-City TV, Central does cover more than three cities! That would annoy lots of people any name for Central, would have to include some reference to being in the middle of the country!

I know they're awful names - but that was my point - sooner or later companies are going to run out of decent names and I was wondering if anyone could think of any other new, better and imaginative names for the regions.

So why don't you have a go?

Some of them are okay, but the name of a region can't really have the name of a town or city in it because it's unfair to other places in the region. The name needs to really be something which would cover the whole region, and I therefore think that the current ones are OK (apart from Yorkshire, which I remember watching in, um, Lincolnshire. Calendar TV or something similar would be better).

I think that Capital TV would be alright for London (as long as Capital FM didn't mind!). TV Midlands for Central? Mike Neville TV for Tyne Tees?

Hehehehe - I like the name, although the fierce Welshie's won't want to be associated with the 'evil' English! Smile

Channel should become Channel Islands Television (or CITV for short. Ah, OK then)
