Just saw the front page of one of the newspapers and apparently the new face of Formula 1 on the BBC is Richard Hammond!!

Although the F1 contract straddles digital switchover which will make things a lot easier - I suspect that qualifying will end up on BBC3 when the schedules demand.

One of these days, people will realise that (a) BBC3 and 4 don't broadcast during the day (6am-6pm) and (b) the broadcast space is turned over to two kids channels during the day, so they can't just "open them up".

Top Gear's Richard Hammond in pole to take over F1 coverage on BBC

It could be “hello Richard Hammond” and “goodbye Gary Lineker” after a dramatic day during which broadcasters battled for Britain’s most popular sports rights.

Hammond, the Top Gear presenter who survived a high-speed crash, is in pole position to become the face of Formula One after the BBC reclaimed the sport in a Ł200 million deal.

All I can say is: Rolling Eyes

I also read that Hammond might take up the post - but also that Murray Walker is in talks to resume commentary, he is in "serious talks" with the bbc somebody told me - so perhaps murray may make a return to his old post?

It would be a big mistake to put Murray Walker in the commentary position - they need to make a programme for the future, not for the past.

Seeing as Murray didn't know about it until yesterday morning, I doubt he's in serious talks with them just yet.

I doubt he'll return apart from the odd guest appearance - he did retire from TV many years ago

I'm fully aware of that.

Perhaps you don't realise that qualifying doesn't always happen during the day! Wink

Besides, if they wanted to change the broadcast hours of BBC3/Cbeebies for a day there's no technical reason why they can't

Surely if the qualifying happens during the day, and they are unable to alter the broadcast hours for BBC Three/Four, then it could be shown live on interactive, with a summary programme shown later on one of their channels.

Richard Hammond?? I just cannot see it, I love Top Gear but having those three do F1 is mad.
In fact I seem to remember that out the three of them, Jeremy is the biggest fan of the sport, surely he would be a better choice.
I hope David Croft gets the commentary gig though, listened to some of his commentaries last year and thought he was excellent

Oh come on, it's just the tabloids making stuff up for **** and giggles. How is that not obvious? The only possible element of truth is that Murray will crop up at some point as a pundit or special interview.

I wouldn't mind Hammond presenting the F1. Remember that he is trained as a DJ, presenter and journalist, and, considering his job, is probably very knowledgeable on the subject. Also, he is very enthusiastic, which can't be faulted.

What I'm concerned about is that we might accidentally get the title sequence carried over from ITV. True, the choice of Moby's Lift Me Up as the theme tune was excellent, but the titles always gave me a headache. Hopefully the BBC will come up with a better F1 title sequence than a roulette wheel and some naked ladies.
