ITV have lost the rights to show F1 from the 2009 season. The programme will be shown on the BBC. They will hold the rights for 5 seasons, 2009 to 2014.

The contract includes permission to broadcast it on bbc sport online, radio and tv.

The 5 year deal was done for an undisclosed fee by the BBC and President of the FOM, Bernie Ecclestone.

So the TV coverage goes full circle. It never actually left the BBC, they've had the radio rights for a very long time.

Still, could have been worse. Could have ended up on Setanta.

There is speculation that this was part of deal secure ITV keep Champions League rights, we find out later today if they do.

And hopefully no more James Allen! Laughing

Actually... that's quite a good point... Who would commentate for the BBC now? Would they bring Murray out of retirement, or get new people, or sign people over from ITV?

I read that ITV found out about this through media reports... wouldn't they know of this anyway or did they not bother to place a bid in or something? Or does F1 broadcasting right work ifferently to other sports broadcasting?

Surprisingly MediaGuardian say ITV have pulled out of their current deal, which was due to run to 2010.

This came out of the blue though - all the attention on the Champions League, and F1 had been performing quite well for ITV since Hamilton arrived on the scene.

Poor old Steve Rider though - goes to ITV for F1 and then gets the Champions League - and it's quite possible he'll lose both

I wonder if a return to the BBC is a possibility, or indeed who the BBC would get to present their coverage. I can't see them giving it Suzi Perry, and I'm not sure whether John Inverdale is much of an F1 fan.

Jim Rosenthal could be a possibility I suppose now he's been let go by ITV, but I would think the BBC would rather have someone from within the corporation.

Moving F1 isn't so bad at least it's on a free to air channel. When I saw this thread I thought it would move to Sky or Setanta. I hoping that the current free to air Champions League rights stay as they are.

When did ITV let Jim go? Does he no longer do ITV 4's Champions League and Boxing?

I can see Suzie Perry being a pit lane reporter, Rider returning to the Beeb and them signing Martin Brundel.

Not happening only ONE Wednesday fixture is to be available (unlike two Tuesday games) with the new deal.
