Inspector, in my formative years, as part of a School day out we all were packed off on a coach to go to London.
Boat trip was included, and the highlight for me was seeing Kings Reach Tower and the LWT logo at the top - although I do agree with you, there another one lower down on the podium building.

It must have been early/mid 80's as I don't remember ever seeing it, even on the TV

It definitely wasn't there in 1989 when they did their 21st birthday stuff and it wouldn't have been after that for various reasons

As for the branding on the tower, I thought that you couldn't advertise on the Southbank/Thames. Only the OXO tower got away with it for some reason? :S

I'm fairly certain that can't be right ... IBM has had its logo displayed on one of the South Bank buildings for several years (although may be it's not river-facing)?

But it does seem a bit strange the lack of any other obvious examples of advertising and corporate logos being displayed along the Thames so who knows ...

That reason was because they're circular and X shaped windows that just so happen to spell OXO, that's how they got round the rule.

It is another reason why I'm skeptical about there being a logo on there before. I don't know if the rule still exists, the only signs on that bit of The South Bank I can think of are the electronic display on the National Theatre and 'Sea Containers House' - both 80's additions

There were huge 'This Morning' signs facing the river for years, the outlines of which are still burnt onto the exterior!

I think the ban on advertising along the Thames is a historical thing. There are plenty of examples, as included in ITV's withdrawn 2010 planning application.

The full list of planning applications for the building can be found here. This one (from 2011, also withdrawn) is interesting!

The bra one went ahead - seem to remember it was a This Morning stunt for breast cancer.

A search on flickr shows the tower in the 80s with flagpoles on it. Could this be what people are thinknig were the LWT logos facing the building, namely not on the building, but on flags?

I definitely remember the LWT, Thames-side, being at the top of the building, on the building and not on a flag.

There's also an octopus. Why is there an octopus?

Who knows, can't really say whether it's Telethon related either. Laughing
