ITV is set to unleash a further two channels next year it's been revealed.

According to Broadcast, the broadcaster is looking at launching channels in the shopping and gaming market to provide an alternative to traditional advertising revenues.

Jonathan Lewis, ITV's director of digital channels has previously stated that shopping, betting and gaming channels as examples of future channels.

Yesterday at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch ITV chief exec Charles Allen confirmed, "We are looking at transactional revenues through ITV Play and shopping."

ITV4 is also set to launch on Sky in November.

Just what we need... more shopping and gaming channels. Rolling Eyes

I wonder if we'll see a revival of Shop!.

Although, knowing how ITV seem to change their tune, they could be a knitting channel and a birdwatching channel before they hit our screens.

It's probably just because the site the story's on is dedicated to Sky.

They must be getting pretty desperate at ITV if a shopping channel is seen as a way of gaining extra revenue. The profits of such a channel are dwarfed by the revenue of even a small ITV region.

Still, when they sell up to the Yanks in a few years they'll be able to merge with Great Universal and go on that way.

Reading about this somewhere today (MediaGuardian probably) it also mentioned ITV are interested in acquiring Sit Up TV - the company behind Bid TV and Pricedrop TV.

Hopefully though they want to acquire them in the "Granada Plus" way as in buy them, close down their channels, then use the space on Freeview for something better!

Are you sure about that? Last I heard Telewest had taken control of Sit-Up.

EDIT: Yup, from the Sit-Up website.

Quote:
In May 2005 sit-up was wholly acquired by its then majority shareholder Telewest Global Inc (through its wholly owned subsidiary Screenshop Ltd), in a deal which valued the company at more than £194 million.

As good as that would be I couldn't see it come back, Granada had a good idea for having a joint venture as the channel was backed by Littlewoods/Index, but it was their choice to closedown the channel, as it was running at a loss throughout its life, which has been reflected with the closure of the Littlewoods Index Catalogue company.

Though the channel I would presume was expensive to maintain, as it was the only shopping channel to come from Liverpool, and didn't look like it was being played off a video tape, which some channels do appear to do so at times.

Not sure where you heard that from. I'm told Granada were shocked at the request from Littlewoods to close Shop! as, although the profits weren't great, they were still profits.
It was definitely littlewoods that closed the channel rather than Granada.

Ahh an error on my behalf, I still have the report from Granada News on the announcement on the closure of Shop! and it was rather clear that Granada wanted to keep the station running, where as Littlewoods said that they wanted to end the channel due the over crowded market place, or also the fact that Littlewoods/Index hasn't been performing too well either.

I'm always surprised that Granada Liverpool keeps going, now it's only a Newsroom, where as Shop! brought a new lease of life into the place and at least guaranteed some form of future.
