Anyone have any idea of the Ratings for this? Can't think they'll be great, just interested.

Seems to be doing quite well.

As will all such things, it probably depends on how you want to spin it.

550,000 viewers is barely more than a third of what News at Ten attracted in the 10.30 slot. On those figures, I wouldn't be surprised if The Nightly Show + News at 2230 delivered a higher average number of viewers across the 10pm hour than News at Ten + After the News.

If the aim is to extend the evening peak to cram in more high-price ads, it doesn't look like a success. If the aim is to bolster ITV's current affairs reputation, then beating Newsnight looks good.

Hit the nail on the head. Beating Newsnight is not really a big deal - most programmes scheduled in that slot beat it, though it is interesting that this of pretty much the same genre is doing better.

If the 10-11 hour overall produces better ratings then that's what really counts as a success. The Nightly Show seemed to do that but was rather expensive to make. Lygo seems determined to extend prime time so I wouldn't be surprised to see News at Ten moved again at some point.

I'm a regular Newsnight viewer, but I've given After the News a chance over the last few weeks and - although its a different format and probably unfair to form comparisons - it strikes me that After the News is the red-top, and Newsnight is the broadsheet. The two programmes are not aimed at the same audience, IMO, so therefore I can't see Newsnight being overly concerned at the ratings - certainly not in the longer term.

However (and I'm sorry for dipping slightly into fantasy scheduling here), I do see an opportunity for the BBC here - especially if After the News becomes a permanent fixture. Somebody mentioned earlier that After the News has the benefit of being on ITV's main channel, whereas Newsnight does not.

There's really nothing post-10.45pm on BBC One that can't be moved these days (Question Time-excepted), so it might be a masterstroke to move Newsnight to a half-hour slot at 10.30pm on BBC One, with a trail during the 10pm headlines and no junction at 10.30pm. Then the Regional News at 11.00pm.

On occasions where the nations have current affairs output (e.g. Nolan in NI, Wales Live), this could pre-empt Newsnight, which would still be available on the News Channel.

This would also free up post-10pm BBC Two for BBC Three content, plus Imagine documentaries etc.

Newsnight's ratings would presumably increase being on BBC One, and with the lead-in from the Ten, which might put some teeth back into the programme, and would create a nice current affairs block to go head-to-head with ITV. Because post-10.30pm is becoming a bit of a no-mans-land for both channels at the moment.

I wonder if scotland would move newsnight to 23.45 to make way for holby city and the other networked content dumped at 22.45.

So back to the thread. Maybe itv should be looking at 12 week blocks. Ie bring back the nightly shows back for 12 weeks Jan to march and July to September.
then after the news April to june and Oct to Dec?

How much freedom does both BBC and STV Scotland have in moving programmes? In the US, affiliates have a bad habit of moving or not airing certain network daytime shows, with other independent channels airing them instead. BBC Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, along with STV have a bad habit of dumping the network for their own regional rubbish.

I remember in 2005, when UTV dumped The Paul O'Grady Show at 5.00pm, replacing it with their utter bore fest UTV Life. STV did the same a few years later with the 5.00pm slot.

Is there an agreement at the BBC and ITV for a certain amount of leeway?

That pretty bises view right here. Firstly BBC scotland and STV have as much freedom it it wants to move content around, I remember BBC Scotland moving eps of Eastenders to BBC2 or even another day for sport. Network shows on BBC Scotland went missing, for weeks or moved to 00.30 - Its only tv but I like it anyone.

The main reason there dont move alot of stuff around is because its pointless and of course it would create alot more work for no good reason.

That regional rubbish, is legal requirement, personnel some of the network stuff it replace is utter rubbish Wink STV opted out of the 5pm slot because of its legal disagreement with ITV before there went to court and everything was sorted out once and for all including a new network agreement. ( Personnel believe is what STV all along)
