At last¡ all the people whinging about the news being bumped to 10.30 can go back to not watching 'News at Ten'. Please ITV let that be a lesson....Never try anything different ever again. Rolling Eyes

Can't quite believe it made it to the end

I can. They commissioned it for 8 weeks and had to follow through with it so as not to look stupid. I never thought they would ever cancel it or move t to a later slot. Hopefully that's an end to it now!

"The stuff Gordon Ramsay did with John Legend has got such global appeal because they're such big stars in America," says Frances Taylor.

In one segment, which was a hit, Legend was seen at a piano, singing some of the foul-mouthed chef's most famous TV insults.

"If you've got names like that then people all round the world will recognise them, and that means that it probably will go viral, and that's the whole point of shows like this ," Taylor adds.

"Bradley Walsh interviewing Louise Redknapp didn't have quite the same worldwide appeal."

The whole point of shows like this is to get everyone else watching but people in the UK? What's the point of having a UK chat show if we can't have our own spin on it and our own culture? From reading this, it's like we might as well just put James Corden's show on every night.

Yep - that view seemed to come from a particularly 'viral' and 'online' world. Indeed f you can monetise those clips effectively, then yes - they do become the point, and if they generate 'guest booking buzz' (i.e. you get A-listers because it will raise their profile significantly) that may also be useful.

However, currently, the core aim of the show is to give ITV eyeballs on adverts... Doesn't matter how many people outside the UK share a viral of Gordon Ramsay, if the advertisers in the UK don't get their numbers, the show won't be seen as a major success.

The other big issue the show had was that it wasn't seen as a 'must be on this show' appointment for visiting talent. A-listers (or their PRs) coming to the UK know that Norton is the most popular, late evening chat show in the UK, and that The One Show is the highest rated show you can currently appear on. Pretty much everyone else is playing catch-up.

If you're looking to a situation in which the average age of someone who watches TV is 61, then it's crucial for TV to get its online strategy together. If they can get eyeballs on content (urgh I hate the word but it's the best one in this circumstance) from not only this country but from beyond our borders, and the people watching are of a much younger age and more attractive to advertisers, then I begin to see why there's a point to this show.

There are lessons to be learned from this series but there's something ITV can build on here. If ITV get a host who is internationally recognised and concentrate on getting a few big viral hits, that acts as its advertising. And if they can get ads around those clips, that's an entirely new revenue source altogether.

And I'm stunned to find myself saying this, but they could do a lot worse than Gordon Ramsay. Some of his stunts were almost YouTuber-esque. And delivered perfectly too - straight to camera with things like I'm playing a prank and you guys are in on it.

Totally agree.

Hopefully it won't just be ditched. Everyone has said it but it needs a longer trial, maybe with just one host, in a longer, post news slot.

Depends what their intention is. If they want to have a true late night show in the UK, they need the right host and the time to let the whole thing bake and let its success happen naturally. If they want viral nonsense then they'll end up with something shallow and desparate, albeit financially viable. I know what I'd rather watch, but I also know what ITV are like.

I don't think anybody had said it needs a longer trial.

ITV clearly need to do more with the 10pm-midnight slot, especially once they lose the Champions League and Europa League highlights, but I don't think we've seen anything over the last 8 weeks that suggests the Nightly Show deserves a second chance in the slot it should have had in the first place.

I've not seen any editions of the show and to be honest I'm glad NAT is back (and not because of the e******n)

My view is that the 10-midnight slot has always been badly utilised by ITV. Not just the bloody stupid cutting of movies in 2 but also the way its never had much of a coherent identity.

A 5 night a week chat show in the UK wouldn't in my opinion work because of the cultural difference between here and the USA.

The rise of 24 hour news has meant that bulletins are accessible anywhere and anytime. Yet NAT is still an important part of ITV's remit.

I'm battening down the hatches here but a possible alternative weekday schedule might be... Rolling Eyes

9.00 ITV Nightline: News, current affairs, extended reports, sports, weather and local bulletins

10.00 Late Night Movie (Mon-Thursday)
Comedy/Chat show a'la John Oliver (Friday)

Yes, axing those highly rated and often critically acclaimed 9pm drama in favour of an hour of news would be really wise.

Movies actually don't have much impact on TV anymore - that's why they're far less frequent than they once were and the broadcasters tend to play safe. Friday is already crowded when it comes to comedy and chat shows, so ITV probably wise to stick with largely running movies there.

I think Monday to Thursday it doesn't even matter too much what they air at 10.40pm but more often than not it needs to be original content rather than written off as when ITV goes to bed and sticks last nights recordings on.
