'V Graham Norton' wasn't quite the flop it's remembered as being. It actually performed well and had decent guests. It only ended because Graham, he said, found it exhausting doing a nightly show with the same resources as a weekly show. Which also seems to be what ITV doesn't get about those US shows. To churn out 5 nights worth of content you need the right people behind the scenes to do that and more of them. Another overlooked, but actually successful, show was 'Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned'. Everyone forgets that show initially started out as a nightly show on ITV. So, contrary to popular belief, we can do these shows albeit temporarily!.

Though of course as it's name suggests, Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned required no production resources at all, they just turned up and did it

I remember Graham in an interview over 10 years ago saying that C4 had promised them a huge budget to go 5 days a week which never really materialised. The majority of the extra funds were spent on booking fees for the studio and not on production.

Yeah, ITV could do worse than bringing that back. I know David & Frank expressed interest a couple of years ago but obviously nothing came of it.

Didn't they reunite for a one-off or something a few years ago? It'd be nice to see them together again, but I think the dynamic might've changed substantially from the laddish era the show was first conceived in.

It seems to be where all our attempts go wrong and I remember Charlie Brooker said something similar when asked if he'd do Newswipe nightly. He said he would but would need a considerably bigger production staff which no channel was willing to invest in. They all want the benefits of a nightly show but aren't willing to put up the money to reap those benefits. They always want t do it on the cheap.

Graham admitted he'd been spoilt doing one show a week first, which made five nights a week all the more exhausting.

V Graham Norton had a pretty good run on the whole, especially when following Big Brother. It started to wobble ratings-wise towards the end, but it was up against BBC2 during something of a golden age of comedy (The Office, League Of Gentlemen, I'm Alan Partridge 2)

Incidentally, only recently realised that V Graham Norton was named as such because of V being the roman numeral for 5! Saying V before things was something of a fad at the time so the double meaning flew over my head Very Happy

Am i the only one that thought Walliams week was better ?

It had better structure & pace although a lot of it was daft. The monologue, guest 1, featured segment, comedian or guest 2. It felt like with the featured segments it was an attempt at getting something to go viral online but failing to hit the mark.

This week is very pedestrian in comparison. With most of the show given over to a single d-list guest. It probably should be pitched somewhere between the two.

No idea where the show will be pitched with Davina.

V Graham Norton definitely worked better when it follow Big Brother rather than when it aired at 10pm in the winter.

The Nightly Show is now an expensive lame duck - especially if they're paying some hosts £50k a show - David Walliams probably got more in a week than Tom Bradby gets in a year. Davina and Dermot will be better interviewers and probably safer pairs of hands but are ultimately quite uninspiring hosts for a nightly talk show.

Although Davina hasn't exactly got the best track record in chat shows....

I think Davina has come on a long way since then, she's presented the Million Pound Drop which I think has a bigger testament to her presenting ability than Big Brother ever was and she's presented the brilliant Long Lost Family which helped her develop a bit.

I also think plonking a BBC chat show based around her was a silly idea the more structured Nightly Show may be a better place for her.

I think they did a world cup podcast a few years ago. The dynamic probably would be different and should be as, having watched clips on youtube recently, some of the laddish banter was pretty horrific and hasn't aged well at all. The format though is timeless and could easily work again. Maybe with 2 different comedians?
