This is only a problem if we lived in a world where ITV is the only source of news available. You mean to say that from 7pm you can't look at the news on a smartphone, check the internet or watch a news channel ?

It's not that I'm not aware of the news... it's the context of it. I would only read the news on my phone or on websites during the day and certainly would not have time to watch it, which I think applies to a lot of people.

Therefore when they're using snippets of Donald Trump's news conference from that day, that would have certainly been the first time I've seen it, which is slightly bewildering when they're mocking something I'm only just seeing for the very first time.

If the show was broadcast after News at Ten then people would have something to reference to, and therefore can see the funny side of what they're mocking. It doesn't quite work the other way round which is how the set up is at the moment, unless you're lucky enough or have had the time to watch the news earlier that day.

Night Thoughts
I inadvertently came across Film 2017 on BBC1 on Wednesday night (after watching TNS), which had Charlie Brooker presenting it. He was very good indeed, and I started wondering if ITV should have stuck TNS on at 10.30/10.45, and given it to Charlie Brooker. Would that have worked better?

In an American context, it probably would work. But I don't think ITV at the moment sees itself as a channel that wants something edgy after the news (even though that's probably an environment which would generate better viral clips). It wants to try it in primetime rather than late, because it sees itself as the home of big shiny floor shows; a later show doesn't seem to be its DNA right now. Shame, really - it makes ITV seem awfully limited as a channel.

The reason they work in America is that they are the last thing people watch before they go to sleep. They're easy watching, and Leno proved in the states that people look for something different in prime time.

Judging by Wednesday's show, it wasn't too bad, but it would have made more sense a little later in the evening. There's elements in it to suggest it can improve, but the host-switching suggests it has the capacity to get worse, not better. All very odd.

Incidentally, polling carried out in 2013 suggests the average British bedtime is 11.15pm. https://www.sleepcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/The-Great-British-Bedtime-Report.pdf

I don't understand that at all. Just because they're producing a show inspired by late night chat shows in America, it has to go out in the dead of night? How would that be remotely helpful unless they were trying to kickstart a Night Network revival?

So you don't think that a late night format is influenced by its time slot?

Just as Good Morning Britain wouldn't work in place of This Morning, late night shows are intended to be consumed at a particular time.

The reason they work in America is that they are the last thing people watch before they go to sleep. They're easy watching, and Leno proved in the states that people look for something different in prime time.

For whatever reason, Americans stay up later than we do. The 10pm mark is what most people in this country would consider late, in my opinion. By all means, ITV have the right to try a show like this even later. Graham Norton doesn't seem to have it too bad finishing his show at 11:20pm, but that's on a Friday night when a lot of people aren't getting ready for work in the morning or taking the kids to school. But it's logical for a commercial channel who are trying their best to get as much exposure as possible to air it when they are now.

The excuse that it should be later because it's a "late night show" is just trivial. The One Show doesn't go out at one o'clock.

Bad. Tonight could be very bad.

It's on John Bishop now to attempt to salvage.

You know I think Gordon Ramsey might just be the show's saviour. The problem we always have in this country when we try to copy something from the US is that we don't do it confidently. Gordon's got enough experience and a couldn't-care-less attitude, both from his career in restaurants and from working on TV in the States, that it might just make him perfect for it.

I agree, hopefully the show will feel less scripted and more natural as it feels far too wooden and 'slick' I think. They definately need to get a better calibre of guests on the show, and maybe have them all sitting together on one sofa like Graham Norton, that way it feels less awkward and more natural.

Not a good start but I think they have to give it more than 4 days before deciding if its a hit or not. I cant believe people are suggesting they move the show as early as week 3 from the 10pm slot! ITV made the decision to move News At Ten for 8 weeks, they need to stick with the show for all 8 weeks in the 10pm slot and see how it does overall for the 8 weeks.

On the bright side as everyone has been so busy moaning about this, the GMB thread has been practically untouched since Monday!

I'm suprised the ratings were so poor last night though as I'd have thought Prime Suspect 1973 would be a good lead in.
