I am wondering if having a different host each week is going to be this show's downfall.

I fear it won't help things. Guest hosts work on things like Have I Got News For You, because the format is so established and the two team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop are regulars every week, so there is some familiarity. This really needs someone to get it into a stride, but none of the upcoming hosts or names suggested here excite me much, tbh.

John Bishop might be a decent fit, given his background on BBC One Saturday nights, but then he's also pretty safe. Maybe someone unexpected will surprise me.

You need someone who is a comic to tell jokes but also interested in current affairs to read the monologues as if they wrote it, but also a good interviewer, a bit contemporary to attract younger audiences but not too ITV2 as you still need to attract the older core demographic, and not too old so it's like a show for pensioners.

Also it needs someone who will take a risk of their career crashing and burning if the show does.

That person probably doesn't exist besides people like Jonathan Ross who already obviously has a gig.

I was going to post this last night, it seems nowadays when someone leaves a show the lazy option is guest hosts. Yes it mostly works on HIGNFY but it didn't on Buzzcocks even though they had some decent guest hosts but most episodes seemed poor after Simon Amstell left, John Bishop should be good with his previous shows on BBC but Gordon Ramsey was one of the worst guest hosts on HIGNFY (even though I quite like him and his cooking shows) Guest Hosts also didn't work on Channel 4 5 O'Clock Show which replaced Paul O'Grady and most weeks doesn't work on Saturday Kitchen therefore I would of liked them to give the show to someone and stick with them for the whole 8 week run.

I'm not saying this to antagonise people or anything but what's with the bitterness about News at Ten being pushed back half an hour? Is it because of the potential dip in figures, or because it's not called News at Ten anymore, or... what?

I think Bradley Walsh would be the perfect host, he is fab on The Chase.

Problem is getting someone to agree to host 5 days a week every week might be difficult unless its someone new who hasn't had their own chat show yet. 5 nights a week would be a big commitment. However I do think having different hosts each week isn't really a good thing either. Be interesting to see how the ratings are later on in the 8 week run, at the moment people will tune in because its something new and also had a strong lead in from Broadchurch last night.

Well it lost a significant audience on night one and it has the weakest lead in of the week tonight.

Commitment wise I think 4 nights a week after News at Ten would be more realistic, with the possibility of recording the Thursday episode on the Wednesday.

That wouldn't address the problem of it already feeling like a middle of the road teatime show as it is. Guest hosts is a daft idea but the choice of uninspiring guests hosts has hindered the show even more. I know it's ITV but, for what they're aiming for, they really needed to be a bit more imaginative with the casting.
Cando, Nicky and Square Eyes gave kudos

It also means however good this week might go they're basically starting afresh next Monday and every Monday afterwards. However if out of the eight weeks ITV get one person they could give a weekly chat show too they'd probably be happy.

Mel & Sue could be entertaining, though I'm unsure how they'll both fit at the desk. Russell Brand or Jack Whitehall are good comedians who could add a bit of risk and have both done interviewing before. Younger comedians like Joel Dommett, Joe Lycett or Tom Allen would have been more of my choosing.
I'm not sure why they've opted for Gordon Ramsey.

It's hardly a lazy option, though, it's surely far harder work to have guest hosts all the time, because you've got to find a new one every week, and they've got to be trained up in how the format works. It's much lazier to just do the same thing every week.

It seems more likely that shows use them now because it allows them time to do what's basically on-air auditions without immediately plunging one in and potentially dying on their arse, especially if they're replacing someone very popular. The Five O'Clock Show was always doomed to failure, it was a ridiculous idea because the show was so associated with Paul O'Grady.

Reminds me of Jack Docherty when he started his show saying "It would be good if someone said, I'm thirty now and I'll do it until I retire. But it won't be me." You say it's a big commitment but you have Uncle Matt and Alex doing the One Show five days a week (I know Matt only does four days, but you know what I mean). The difference there is that you're not eating up comedic ideas quite so much. The One Show sort of runs itself.

And plenty of fairly big names have daily radio shows.

Do we know which week Stephen Mulhern is hosting yet? Wink
