Ever since ITV dropped the original News at Ten in favour of the short-lived 11pm ITV Nightly News, I've lost count of the number of times that NaT has been reinstated* and ditched again. I find the perpetual cycle to be cringeworthy.
*The first such "reinstatement" was rather half-a r s e d anyway, with it only being called News at Ten for Mon-Thu (with an 11pm "Weekend News" on Fridays), and only usually being scheduled for a 10pm start for 3 out of those 4 days (and seemingly seldom truly starting at 10pm even on those days - which continues to be an issue right up until the present).
Once the Beeb seized the opportunity to jump into the slot by moving their 9pm news, the damage was done. I doubt that ITV will ever be able to make their late weeknight news equal/beat the BBC's Ten ratings, regardless of what "permanent" timeslot it is given (i.e. for just a few years, until the next cycle of schedule tinkering rolls around). The same may well be true of this new chat show (and/or whatever else ITV may ever try to put into the 10pm slot).
I wish them every success with this new show and scheduling, but I don't anticipate it materialising.

I wish it well too and will certainly be watching. We have nothing similar this side of the pond so it's brave of ITV to have a stab. It's got to be quite a compelling option though to encourage people to tune in night after night. It needs a Carpool Karoke style hook. Rotating the hosts could work well or completely bomb - someone you like will only end up doing it for a week then disappear. At least the team can treat it as a series of on-air auditions for a potential second series.
And I sort of understand the animosity but News at Ten will never again have a privileged and secured position in the schedule. ITN/ITV can rebrand it and invest as much as they like, channel controllers will simply come along and see that slot as too lucrative for just news.

Why didn't ITV consider running a half-hour chat show over a decade ago? They could have got more out of the Frank Skinner Show by making it a half-hour programme at 10:00 (i.e. more episodes) instead of it being an hour long, which meant that each episode had to be split for the News at 10:30.

I still think it would be better off at 10.40( ITV) 11.10( Stv)
ITV don't seem to understand how and why those talk show work in the USA. Also there is no room for it to expand the content, maybe to 45mins? Strange thing is UK seem to better at doing talk show at 5pm time slot.
What will happen after 8 weeks is that it finished and then ITV will look at the overall look of the series?

Probably because ITV haven't got the best track record when it comes to light entertainment, especially perseverance with new shows/formats that don't deliver instant results.
I'm looking forward to seeing it, I'm glad ITV are trying something new for a change. I don't really understand anyone thinking negatively about it until they've actually seen it for themselves.

So let's damn it before it's even started, that makes sense.

I'm not damning it. I'm just explaining why people tend to prejudge anything ITV comes out with.
