Trust me - that would be absolute disaster. You need a strict set of guidelines obeyed by every region, but also retaining the sense of regional identity.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. Go down the BBC Local Radio route. Each region should feature a short jingle or symbol (like the BBC Local Radio chimes or theme). Vision-wise, it should be up to the regions, but maybe a type of 'template' should be applied, so each region has a set layout or composition.
Every region should have the same format of promos, use the same font.
Basically, each region should be part of a loose set presentation style.
Hmm sounds good, although I hope LWT don't like whatever is designed because they we'll still have the SMG Look, The UTV Look, The GMG Look, The Carlton Look and the LWT one, which I think is just about enough variation for us fanatics. But of course I am very interested in what a new videowall will look like .
I think that each company should design its own, except there should be a rule stating that the ITV1 logo should be on screen for a certain amount of time, and the ITV.com/region address should be used.
The result would be that we would have more original idents and interesting use of the ITV1 logo.
Why did GMG remove the live action animations from the idents?
Maybe to give them more time to talk over the idents - they've gone so far as to edit the lines version without the 'sting' at the start (although the original version is still available - yes?)
Or maybe the public didn't like the live action clips? Can you imagine someone stopping you in the street asking what your opinion was on such-and-such an ident!
I can understand Meridian/Anglia dropping them for the introduction of itv.com, no need to make more work for yourself when new idents were (probably) always planned for the new year.
Cheers, Asa
Yes the full version of the 'lines' is still available, and is used once or twice a day.
As the 'live action' idents hadn't been used since last Winter, you wouldn't expect new ITV1 versions to be made...
Wrong!, One appeared a couple of months ago, Welder I believe.
Plus the standard short, no animation version is also still used
The reason why Leeds stopped the full versions of idents was because of timing difficulties when doing regional announcements.
Although why they couldn't have just talked over the ident from the start like several other stations do is beyond me. That method has better continuity (no pun intended) anyway IMHO.
I have to say though that I like the idea of longer announcements. It allows the announcer to put a bit more character into the proceedings, and dare I say it, feels more like in-vision. The only problem is the lack of any decent animation in the background.
It's the rigid style of ident then quick announcement that tells you very little which gets on my nerves...

I'm absolutly sure I saw the welding animation ident on Meridian in September and I've got a glimpse of seeing Fairground around that period. ITV should revert back to the 90s style graphics, individuality as it fits in better with regional programs but like someone has said they should all feature the ITV1 logo to show they are part of ITV1, the reason ITV1 have become so sure on a generic look over the past 2 yeras is becos of there Digital service, if ITV1 logo isn't shown much it wouldn't make sense is there is an ITV2, maybe we should have ITV2 regions? Just a suggestion;)

As i heard it, LWT would be scrapped, now London can have a single Franchise.
I think all channels should drop their regional logo and symbols, and just go with ITV1 only or maybe ITV1 South East before regional programes etc.
No This Cant happen although LWT is nothing spectacular it gives me 2 & a half days away from them smug gits Carlton. LWT is always proud to mention it's name & the fact it is part of the ITV network Carlton Just likes mentioning its name very badly
i.e. 'This is Carlton, Television now London Tonight'
To be fair, I really cannot see much enthusiasm from regions going all 'ITV1' on us. I watched a couple of programmes recently where they mentioned 'we were interviewed by Granada for the job...' or whatever and can't see them saying ITV1 in the same way as BBC. LWT, for one, is such an established name, I'm sure there would be opposition from inside not to ditch it.
If only they could create a design that is corporate, incorporates the channel name and logo and ITV1 in a nice way!
And I disagree Johnny, I think both Carlton and LWT announcers are very proud to mention their name! You should come over to Granadaland and see how they proud they are
I thing that all companies should have something different, which matches their regional identities, but have ITV1 on the bottom with the ITV.com bit, telling us that they are part of ITV1!
