They are definally making moves in the right direction. I know many people think anything short of axing Corrie and The X Factor and filling the schedule with documentaries is not good enough, but the various new ideas, new comedy pilots, outside the box dramas etc are boosting ITV's offering, even if ratings can be mixed

Totally agree. I always find it funny how people shout "axe! axe" to ITV's 2 biggest shows. Why would they want to axe the shows which give them the biggest ratings just because someone on a forum says so? Rolling Eyes

I don't think anybody is suggesting the axe should fall on these shows. They bring in massive audiences for ITV and are of a great quality. I think the problem, certainly with Corrie, is that it's on too much. Surely the overexposure would cause ratings to take a downturn? Perhaps a reduction in the volume of episodes would be a good move to take - it would definitely see an improvement in terms of quality of writing and would also be a good enticement for new viewers to tune in who may have previously been weary of watching because it's hard to keep up with.

The X Factor is perfect as it is - Dancing on Ice is another big show for the channel, and they now have Britain's Got Talent to add to that family of shows. In terms of light entertainment, I'd say they're doing a pretty good job.

So far, I like what I'm seeing. I think it's still incredibly early to say that they're doing a rubbish job because we've not actually seen the full extent of what they have planned. Some of the commissions we've been hearing about are very encouraging though - particularly in drama.

I think Pokerface was a good, edgier gameshow format but for some reason ITV didn't have the confidence there...ah well

Ive been saying they should reduce Corrie to 3 a week since 2003! Sometimes 5 a week is a lot to keep up with. Unfortunataly after all this time I think its unlikely unless we see a significant drop in ratings.

ITV have a great entertainment package of programmes as you said with Dancing on Ice, X Factor and BGT. They also have Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Family Fortunes, Pokerface and Gameshow Marathon - id say Saturday nights are great for most of the year.

ITV are also trying to show different types of programmes - they have Tycoon which I watched this week and enjoyed, although I understand it didnt do well in the ratings, but at least ITV are trying out different programmes instead of the same things all the time.

I think ITV is slowly improving. The killing off of CITV seems to have helped their daytime share and it now seems that they are putting more original programming the slot. However I do believe they should try and give the kids something fresh and exciting to watch.

Comedy has made a comeback, okay it's not the kind of LOL comedy that Thames & Yorkshire used to produce but at least they are trying.

Personally though ITV1 still doesn't do anything for me, there is very little to engage me. I would love to get back into Corrie but I haven't got the time in my life to watch it day in and day out.

I am sure ITV has turned a corner now and the dark days are behind them.

My final wish is to scrap the current trashy downmarket ITV News service.

They should have this on a Friday Night slot, every week for a few months to see how they go then maybe gradually have it continuasly. - this would keep viewers watching ITV rather than switching over to over channels.

I think ITV has improved over recent months - they just need to get their on screen presentation sorted - compared with its competition ITV 1's on screen look is as dull as dishwater.

Re: Corrie - "protecting the quality"

Do you really think that would happen if they reduced it to three episodes as wouldn't ITV just cut the budget accordingly?

2 areas where ITV could improve;

Arrow Daytime, in particular the afternoons. Between 2pm-6pm most of the slots since January have been filled with repeats of drama's such as Inspector Morse, Poirot, Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders.

Arrow 7pm. Im sick to death of seeing Emmerdale in the listings day in day out. Bring back quiz shows to the 7pm slot, especially on Fridays.

Its not about the budget. The budget is clearly there. Its about the amount of episodes per week. Steve Frost is doing a brilliant job so it hasnt been much of a problem having 5 episodes this past 6-9 months (which is why ive not mentioned them reducing it to 3 a week for some time) but during 2003/4 and especially 2005 there were often about 2 episodes a week worth of padding and storylines would drag on forever.
