At least someone at the top has admitted there is a problem with ITV, whether he know how to solve this issues is another issues. but why has it taken so long for ITV to finally see what many other people have been saying for years? will this also effect relationship with STV

ITV bosses claim channel is in a 'ratings rat race'

ITV programmes are aimed towards the "lowest common denominator", channel bosses have said.

ITV chairman Archie Norman said the broadcaster, home to shows such as Coronation Street and The X Factor, is stuck in a "ratings rat race".

ITV chief executive Adam Crozier also told the Lords communications committee that ITV's schedule had a "remarkable lack of diversity

ITV axed its flagship arts programme The South Bank Show earlier this year while Simon Cowell has just signed a new three-year deal with the channel to broadcast The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent.

The X Factor is a socially cohesive programme which brings together a wide spectrum of viewers. No-one's ever tried to pretend it's a serious talent contest, but it's not "lowest common denominator".

Whatever anybody says, if that barsteward of a show ever gets the chop, ITV wins me over.

I think you're over-egging the pudding there, Chie. Wink

X Factor is over-rated tat: it's an 'end of the pier' type talent show, nothing more! They've been broadcast under various guises for decades.

I'd rather cut the grass in my back garden with a pair of nail scissors, than spend my evenings watching most of the mind-numbing drivel broadcast by ITV. At least their Chief Executive realises the sub-standard quality of their output, even if you don't.

Bravo Stuart. I have to say X Factor and Britain's Got Talent do win on one count; the best programme to have your intelligence insulted. Flashy graphics and quick camera cuts - there's no need. I have got quite a good attention span.

I was at a friend's Saturday night and couldn't believe how long the X Factor went on for, and the fact they have a break between EVERY act. It's about time ITV bosses realised what a state their channel is in.

Although, I do enjoy Coronation Street. Very Happy

I dislike The X Factor as much as the next TV Forumer but to be fair there are quite often 2 acts in each part.

Of course - plenty of people think The X Factor is tat, and I have no grievance against them. However, high-rating programmes play an important socially cohesive role in our fragmented society. The X Factor draws 15 million people of all ages, generations, genders and races together, sharing the same experience at the same time. Do we want to live in a world where that never happens and individuals are always doing their own thing? Whether you personally like The X Factor or not, in this respect the programme's benefit to society cannot be denied, and shouldn't be overlooked.

My feeling is that in arguing for market deregulation, Adam Crozier was appealing to the (potential) prejudices of the committee, some of whom, like yourself, may be glad at the prospect of seeing the back of 'common' programmes. Wink What ITV really ought to do at the earliest opportunity, in my opinion, is axe Jeremy Kyle, which would do wonders in terms of lifting the brand's image perception out of the 'chav channel' mire.

Chie may well have a very valid point:

Finally someone senior at ITV realises they need to put a little effort into making a channel good to watch.
