That's a shame. Granada TV should stay at its famous Manchester studios with the GRANADA TV lettering. Coming from Preston / Bolton direction on the train, you pass them as you enter Manchester Piccadilly station.

Granada TV moving out of the said Manchester studios is as bad as knocking down the former Westward/TSW studios at Derry's Cross Plymouth. I hope they don't remove the Granada TV lettering and don't knock down the old Granada studios. The Granada studios should be grade 2 listed, with the lettering as part of the listing.

I don't believe for one second you were unaware of the lettering having been removed.

Not one second.

I'm inclined to agree with you, Gav. It was too much of a thing on this very forum that the letters were removed.

This move almost certainly guarantees construction of Metrolink to the Trafford Centre via Man Utd and IWMN.

As for the main 3Sixty Media studios, they'll probably move to Salford Quays as well eventually,

I don't think that the 3Sixty Media joint venture will continue once both move to Salford, the new studios are owned and will be run by the Peel Group. I must have been quite keen on getting ITV on board, their studios would have struggled with Quay Street still operating

How so?

Hopefully the current Coronation Street set won't be demolished, and could be turned into some sort of tourist attraction, considering a Granada Studios Tour type thing would never happen again on the set being used for filming.

When did Coronation Street start using outside filming for the street?

This is what I briefly hinted at in my earlier post, but I think it's very unlikely. I reckon the most likely outcome for the
current premises at Quay Street, is a quick sale to developers, followed soon by total demolition of the entire site.
The GRANADA TV office block would be first to come down, then the studios, followed by the Corrie set itself.

There's certainly potential for the old Bonded Warehouse building (if ITV sell that as well) to be converted into yet another unnecessary batch of posh overpriced apartments designed for people with more money than sense!

There was something about this in the Corrie thread sometime ago, but the exterior set we have now has been in use since 1982. Prior to that they had a street but it wasn't a proper one like we have now.

Granada Reports ran a tribue to Quay St tonight, and I've uploaded the report to YouTube, for nostalga....

Actually quite a positive move by ITV IMO - for once looking to the future doesn't just mean closing studios for the sake of closing them.

Anyhow, one line from the DS report caught my eye:
Quote:
A dedicated site has been earmarked for ITV across several floors of MediaCity's Orange Building, providing modern accommodation for production arm ITV Studios. All ITV's regional news teams will eventually broadcast from a dedicated studio in the building.

The apostrophe is probably crucial there, but I'm assuming they are just referring to Granada - rather than some plan to broadcast all regional news from a central studio in Manchester.

Reading the title of this thread I was concerned that Corrie filming was moving out of Greater Manchester altogether, and had visions of many old faces departing (actors not prepared to commute to the new base) to be replaced by new characters with southern accents! I'm not playing down the sadness of Quay Street closing for good, but at least Corrie's still going to be produced in the area the programme is set in, and actually in Salford itself.

At 1:59 into that clip shows the "Tour Departures" at the old Granada Studios Tour. That's where the viaduct was
for the previous outdoor Corrie set used from 1968 until the current one around the corner opened up in 1982.
The row of viaduct used on the 1968-1982 Corrie were real, and the arches are still there today.

I agree, can you imagine if they moved Corrie to Leeds or even worse down South!

Its very sad the studios are closing, I hope they dont demolish anything! They could use the main building for office space or turn it into a hotel (It looks a bit like a Travel Lodge type building from the outside anyway!) - the bonded warehouse, im not sure if that could be a listed building? Its years old so id have thought they would have got rid by now if they could. Hopefully that and the old Corrie set will be kept for some sort of tourist attraction!
