I was also born in the mid-eighties and I mostly remember ITV being fully packed with regional identification and programming. When ITV turned 'generic' (circa 1998) I think we lost a lot of the cosy 'welcome home' feel. However, times have changed, and what we have today is fine as far as i'm concerned.
I think I got worst in 1993, this was when big five lost out. Like Thames. Form that point at least I’m sure ITV start to got worst, and some of its magic, and I was born in the mid eighties.
'The big five lost out. Like Thames'? Umm, Thames was the only 'big 5' company which lost in 1992.
A regression? You mean poor........bad......worst..... ...as in good....better....best..?
Well no, in that case it is definatly
not
the worstest. We all know that they're well capable of pushing the barriers of crassness out much further. BTW OfCom will pay a fortune to hear your views on this, I'd give them a ring. Several times a day, you'd get on really well with them.

What I should Written, one of big 5 loser, with the other Being, TV am (I if is still better than Gmtv), TVS, Television South West, I can never remember the firth one. But TVS did try to become the 6th biggest player in the ITV network. As the big Five where
Thames - lost out in 1992
Yorkshire TV
LWT
Granada
Central - brought out by Carlton, which was big mistake as this drover the quality of the programmers to go the same as it london Operation , as Carlton hasn’t made a descent programmer in it life
'Carlton hasn't made a decent programme in its life '
Thats because it was set up as a Publisher -Contractor. Like Channel 4. It wasn't expected to.
(It achieved a way into production when it bought Central.)
Bottom line. ITV had to consolidate to survive. In those days we didn't have satellite and digital - these days there are too many channels competeing for audience and commercial revenue. ( apologies for stating the obvious)

The loss of Thames was the beginning of the end though.
Carlton came in and then took over Central as well because Central made lots of programmes for the network.

There wasnt a 5th one. Thames, TVS, TSW and TVam went and Carlton, Meridian, Westcountry and GMTV started from 1993.
