Why isn't there a clean feed of the network anymore?

Another damn fine question.

Initially, late October last year, there were only two options. Dirty, sending EVERYTHING, including the announcer's voice; or clean, without everything, EVEN the announcer's voice.

In order to implement central announcing, the only option at day one was dirty.

Since then, however, lots of things have changed, not least the central playout systems.

Why they STILL use the dirty option for SMG and UTV, I haven't a clue, I'm afraid. I'd have THOUGHT it would have been simple, with the new system, to send dirty to the regions where LNN are doing the continuity; and clean to the others, but they don't seem to.

I think I'm as puzzled as you, Matt.

Ah, thanks for that, Larry. You're obviously more up-to-date than I am.

What I'm interested in knowing is how it's been allowed to happen. With the exception of Channel who from day one knew that they'd be working from a dirty feed, it's surely a basic right of every independent station to have access to a clean network feed. Why are Carlton and Granada allowed to put ITV1 on the network feed and then make SMG and UTV cover it up? Surely they've got a right in their contract to have access to a clean feed somewhere?

Indeed correct - overnights are now recorded by the 'regional' announcer each day.

So Glen Thompsett was the regional announcer yesterday?

I am sure about yesterday but he is today (Wednesday).

Just wondering what people think about this? I think they have because they keep playing out the wrong recorded announcements... just going into the ITV Early Morning News we had the announcement for the late night repeat of "Today with Des and Mel"... and a few weeks ago I heard the announcement for GMTV going out before the Morning News...

This would never happen if we still had our regions!

Obviously a pre recorded scheduling error.

Sounds more like they got the tracks out of sync with the breaks - playing each one earlier than they should. This is common when playing annos from minidisc and the operator either misses a track or plays the same one twice.

LNN don't play anno's from mini-disc, it's a little more advanced than that!

but none of the regional bits from the South Bank, Leeds, Glasgow and Belfast add their bits on top of it

and birmingham i presume Confused

the only reason i'm guessing central tx is still from brum is due to the lack of breakflashes and the fact the local gmtv news went out ok this morning (as opposed to the problems in the lwt regions)

it'd be useful if someone could confirm whether central tx has moved?

I'm sure UTV don’t wont a clean feed. With the dirty feed they have an excuse for making the channel S***. With a clean feed, they would have to pull their socks up and start making the channel look good.

SMG would be better with a clean feed but I'm sure there not really bothered either way.

Well, not really, just my understanding of it is that there is a clean with programmes, continuity and trails and a 'dirty' which was the full regional service for London (now also the full regional services for South, West, East etc)

I suspect that having 2 diffrent clean feeds at the same time, one with trails for Leeds and one with just programmes for Scotland and NI.... as well as 5 regional versions is a lot more complex

ITV's got terrible recently... it's too sexed up for my liking. They try to sex up TV shows - Crossroads' "Yvon Grace" revamp and Corrie's gay kiss being two cases in point. Wonder how Corrie fans will react? Crossroads fans made their point known, hopefully Corrie's will be more open!

Yes and what a good job he made of it. The announcement before Soccer Night actually made mention of the presenter and the matches that we were about to see. As opposed to what we usually get, something like "Everything Must Go tommorow at 2, but now on .... ITV1 its Soccer Night".

Tuesday's Emmerdale ECP appeared so late it cropped the YTV endcap

Wednesday's Emmerdale ECP appeared for a brief second before disappearing, and reappearing a few seconds later

Thursday's post-regional full screen ECP was a farce

Does anyone know since when they have stopped using the regional idents in prime time, I tuned in for Better Cars or whatever it was and the ident which preceeded it was a Mel Sykes one but with ITV1, but no Granada, though the announcement was regional and promoting The Last Word. I thought it was a mistake at Leeds or London, but has this happened to any other regions? Or have I just noticed this?

Yes it happened in Yorkshire as well.

So who is it who decides which ident to use, Leeds or London?
