ITV blocks Lynam's news quiz slot
ITV blocked a guest appearance by sport presenter Des Lynam on news quiz Have I Got News For You, the channel has said.
Lynam, one of ITV's biggest stars, is tied to an exclusive contract and the network does not want him to appear on rival channels, a spokeswoman said.

"Unfortunately for Des, he does have to come and ask our permission," she said, adding it was not an unusual decision.

Lynam, who is to retire from sports TV next year, was asked to be guest host for one episode of the BBC programme.

The ITV spokeswoman said: "In the same way that the BBC doesn't let people from EastEnders go on the Frank Skinner show, it's the same with any exclusive stars. The BBC do it all the time.

"I was very keen to do it but was told I couldn't" said Des Lynam

"We have very, very few exclusive stars and Des is one of them, and there was lots of other stuff going on at the time. "On this occasion, it was decided that he wasn't going to do it."

Have I Got News For You has been using guest presenters for more than a year since former host Angus Deayton was sacked amid allegations about his private life.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We did approach [Lynam] and he wanted to do it but then he wasn't able to."

Lynam told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I was very keen to do it but was told I couldn't."

Lynam, who worked for the BBC for 30 years - fronting shows like Match of the Day - will leave ITV after the Euro 2004 football championships.

The 60-year-old presenter joined the network in 1999 when it won the rights to screen Premiership football highlights.

Is this another exibit in how unreasonable ITV are. Do they wonder why they have such an appalling reputation? I don't think the BBC would mind if it was a reversed situation.

I think the BBC would mind, depending on the sort of contract the presenter was on.

I think the BBC would mind, depending on the sort of contract the presenter was on.

But this is typical belligerent ITV behavior isn't it. Being completely and deliberately unreasonable at anything.

Do you remember the arguement about the BBC wanting to use the Who Wants To Be a Millionaire set for an Only Fools and Horses christmas special? ITV said they were happy to oblige, but only if they could show all previous episodes.

Erm, no! Go make your own half-decent cult programmes sil-vous-plait. They finally poach a half decent sport commentator, yet couldn't be more obvious in how desperate they are to keep poor Des!

It's just a sign of the times with of the petty attitude which TV companies attribute to their assets. Remember when the 2001 OFAH christmas special wanted to put Del on Millionaire and would only be allowed to if ITV had exclusive terrestrial repeat rights to the programme?

A far cry from when ITV let One Foot in The Grave not only feature You've Been Framed, but even let them use their logo and generic ident sequence too.

I hope Hat Trick make reference to this ludicrous decision (although it must be said that if the same were true the beeb would do exactly the same).

Er...have you read the paragraph which says...

Seems they are as bad as one another!

I am undecisive in this yet. ITV shouldn't be so scroogy, yet they did pay a lot of money for him on an exclusive itv contract. I can see how itv's reasoning. Perhaps if Hattrick or the BBC would have offered itv a fee along with Des they may have been happier and more leniant (sp?)

It has also happened the other way. The BBC has previously stopped its talent from appearing on ITV.

Anyway, why shouldn't ITV stop Des from hosting a BBC One show? Isn't that what EXCLUSIVE contracts are all about?

Ok, ITV not letting 'Only Fools and Horses' use the Millionaire set - petty. This would have been publicity for ITV anyway.

ITV not letting Lynam on 'Have I got news for you' - fair enough, they pay Lynam for an exclusive contract.

Even though several EastEnders (and other BBC) stars have been on Frank Skinner and other ITV chatshows.

It's a diffrent case because those stars are there to promote their programmes.

Give an example of an EastEnders star who has appeared on The Frank Skinner Show. I can't think of any. It just shows how ratings driven the Beeb has become.

The most high profile case was when the BBC stopped Michael Greco from appearing on The Frank Skinner Show.

Things are a lot better now than they were 20 or so years ago. In the old days of the broadcasting duopoly, BBC and ITV barely acknowledged each other on air at all (on the odd occasion they did it was always as 'The Other Side' ). Presenters were all on exclusive contracts and it was a big thing when they swapped sides. These days things are very diffrent, many BBC and ITV presenters are freelance.

ITV are perfectly in their rights to stop him presenting HIGNFY - he is on an exclusive goldern handcuffs deal. If he was a guest on the programme it would be diffrent (he appeared on Room 101; no problem) same if he was promoting ITV,

It still seems rather petty to enforce it in this case. If the beeb asked Des to cover Grandstand for a weekend, that would be different. In this case they have asked him to make a one off guest appearance on a 30 minute show which has nothing to do with Sport - the whole reason ITV signed him in the first place. The contract exists, yes, but it seems very petty not to allow this (small) exception to it.

And this rigid inflexibility is surely only going to further discourage celebrities from signing exclusive contracts and soon there could well be a situation where a presenter commentates a football match on ITV on Friday and then presents Grandstand on Saturday.
