Im not sure if this should get its own thread if not the mods can shot gun it into ITV one.

I do like this idea, its not a lot of money but if it keeps some of the public rolos on ITV then it can only be good

Quote:
ITV could benefit from up to £130m a year of BBC licence fee money to pay for regional news and children's programmes, the government has said.

Ministers will consult on whether 3.5% of the fee should go to ITV and other public service broadcasters from 2013.

Money left over from the costs of switching over to digital TV by 2012 could be used to fund pilot schemes.

Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw outlined the plans as part of the government's Digital Britain report

We pay a licence fee for public service broadcasting which comes from the BBC. The BBC provides quality regional news, excellent childrens programmes, and is bound by rules which mean it has to commission programmes for indies too. Sending some of this money to ITV to keep their paltry news and children's offerings alive is not in the public interest. We don't need more than one publicly funded regional news programme.

Why should the public subsidise the least popular programmes on a commercial network? It is better to invest all the money into the BBC and let them do the job properly.

Well I've only seen it under "Related Stories" on "Minister Jeremy Hunt says licence fee 'could be cut'". It does help when you look at the date on things, though.

No.

The time to do this was when ITV had a concept of public service.

This should have been done around 1990, if it was to be done at all.

Far too late now. Not only has the horse bolted, but it is 9/10 of the way to the next village.

*If* we were going to have a concept of regional PSBs, the "network" part of ITV should have been handed to a third party years ago and the existing contractors given a stake in this new company in return for continuing their full local service in a given few hours each day, paid for by the licence fee.

I think the money is better off staying with the BBC. If you are going to give some of it to another channel, why choose ITV and not five, Sky or Babestation?
