ITV to focus on regional presence
Wednesday, March 7 2007, 10:13 GMT

By James Welsh, International Editor

ITV has pledged to "sustain and even enhance" its regional presence.

Michael Grade, the broadcaster's new executive chairman, said that ITV's "strong regional presence is a greater asset than is recognised" and "is part of what binds ITV to its audiences thorought the UK and distinguishes us from our competitors."

Grade also pointed to growth in regional advertising compared to a "depressed national TV advertising market."

"We... believe that ITV's regional presence, an intrinsic part of the Company's history and identity, will increasingly be a point of difference and a competitive advantage as other commercial players will be unable to match our 'local' connection with viewers or our regional advertising opportunities."

Heritage regional broadcasting names such as LWT and HTV were dumped in October 2002 as part of a plan to unify ITV1 in preparation for multichannel competition.

It's the 15th April

The story was discussed 5 weeks ago (and taken out of context with people assuming regional = regional idents on ITV1), look back about 10 pages

He's already basically said that regional idents won't return and non-news programmes will still probably be dumped, with the exception of some news-related indies like local sports shows and docus and current affairs. Basically, he joined too late to save local TV! However, if you look around the world, we're not alone. Local TV in almost all countries is now just some local news slotted in to a national channel

He did bring up the possibility of the HTV name being brought back though during a visit to ITV West (according to an article on the ITV intranet)...probably won't happen but food for thought anyway.

Am I right in thinking that HTV is still being used for Productions on S4/C?

As nice and encouraging that Mr Grade wouldn't mind the HTV name being brought back, I think it would be pointless and probably entice more confusion.

HTV Wales and West are no longer connected, ITV Wales is a full Region and ITV West is more associated with ITV Westcountry, which makes alot more sense IMO.

Oh well it's not as bad as what they had a few years ago, with the News coming under the HTV name, the Station being known as ITV1 Wales and the Programmes coming from Carlton.

I believe so yes although im not sure quite how much HTV make for S4C now. I know they make Y Bydd Y Bedwar.

As much as id love the HTV name to come back I totally agree it would be pointless. What exactly would they call the channel? "ITV HTV" and the news "ITV HTV NEWS"?

However, Grade has mentioned he expects non-news regional programmes to totally dissappear from ITV1 schedules by 2012, according to MediaGuardian.
