ITV Duty Office just popped into say thanks - or, rather, ITV Duty Office posted:
Thank you for your email and comments which have been recorded here in

You never would've guessed it, would you?

that's a polite way of saying "we read the first line of your email then filed it in our special circular metal file marked 'bin' "

Thats the typical generic response I'm afraid. Sad

At least BBCNicky@Yorks has given it a try, sadly the management at ITV see things differently now. Sad

Maybe you should print out your letter and post it to them, an e-mail is easier to ignore than a paper copy.

I might just try doing that, Jez, but it's not likely that they'll listen, the imbeciles.

ITV was once a strong brand and channel, comprised of several regions throughout the country providing regional programming and also broadcasting network programming. Granada was 'leading' the regions, producing such quality programming such as Coronation Street and World In Action. Nowadays, ITV is weak and 'damp', comprised of several regions that literally only provide the regional news and don't exist, whilst Granada is a shadow of its former self, having taken over the majority of the ITV regional companies and producing such terrible programming like the so-called successful reality show, Celebrity Love Island.

Not meaning to be rude here, but if this e-mail is replied back with a simple 'your comments have been logged' message, I will keep on plaguing you with what you think are pointless e-mails that have been written on behalf of a minority, just like you are plaguing the viewers with programmes packed full up with Z-list celebrities that you presumably have brought back from the trash in an attempt to get more viewers. This is NOT going to work.

Over the past few years, ITV has brought us Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Wrestling, Celebrity Love Island, Celebrity versions of normal programmes such as Celebrity Stars In Their Eyes and the like. No offence intended here, but a certain Mr. Allen must surely be taking the ahem if he is going to allow more celebrity filled programmes to hit our screens. And I must say that I'm not keen on the idea of a second series of Celebrity Love Island to be shown. The tabloid-style that ITN - I mean, ITV News - has taken on is at the very forefront of where things are going wrong, if you understand what I'm trying to say.

Such newsreaders like Mark Austin, Sir Trevor McDonald, Nicholas Owen and Mary Nightingale (as well as Nina Hossain) I can cope with. I feel that I can 'relate' to them, in a way. But since the February 2004 'unified' ITV News Group look came in (as well as the change of brand in 1999 and the removal of ITN's name in the presenter's namecheck in 2002), things have indeed gone downhill.

Melvyn Bragg's 'The Story of ITV' series is, all in all, quite a joke. I was expecting Mr. Bragg to be truthful, to say how ITV was originally set-up (not just a quick 5-minute look) and I also expected the clips from early ITV to be shown in their true aspect ratio, not botched and blown up to 16:9. I feel that clips were shown from recent times rather than focusing on ITV's history.

New idents were filmed for series such as the ill-fated Celebrity Love Island, but no regional idents (that is, if they still do exist - they're never shown) have been filmed. It is not that hard! I mean, come on, with all due respect, special idents are welcomed but regional idents are only shown about once a week - maybe twice, if we're lucky.

Let me end this long 'rant' by saying how much I think ITV has changed during the last half century. Again, no offence meant, but calling ITV 'The People's Channel' is not what I think you should call ITV. Perhaps the 'Celebrity Channel', no?

Thank-you for providing absolutely nothing of interest in terms of new programming within the past few months - apart from at least 8 exceptions.

Regards,
Nicky Lotay

Having read your e-mail in full, I agree with a couple of your points but at the same time can't believe others.

Yes ITV was a great institution of regional broadcasters - but regardless of the number of e-mails or letters you send NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE.

I was with you and your argument till the end of the first paragraph.. then you blew it!

Threatening if you don't give me a response back then "I will" become a nuisance is foolish. Thats hardly going to make them stand up and listen is it?

I agreed with your comments on the Celebrity programming genre - but then to talk about the look of ITV News... and the lack of ITN namecheck. Are you for real?

If you and the rest who read this forum hadn't realised - regional programming and regional idents are all but gone AND WILL NEVER RETURN.
Not because it will p**s you and a few others off - it's because they are trying to build a truely national network and increase profits. There is no crime here, they are a business and as such have a right to costcut which will favour higher returns for shareholders.

Although I do log in occassionally, I have never posted on this site before but after reading your post and those which followed I had to throw my tuppence worth in.

ITV doesn't care what we think. They will continue to shed regional jobs/programming/identity...... but surely a day that we experienced yesterday puts arguing about regional idents in it's place. GIVE IT UP!

And yet the say in "The Peoples Channel": "People liked ITV, and ITV liked people" heard when showing an old clip . Not surprised...

What do you expect?

Did anyone here complain to the BBC about the new weather graphics. Did they listen and change them back to the old style? No

Paul - are you for real? I am not expecting regional idents, announcers etc to return at all . I am merely expressing my views on the state of ITV's programming and why I think ITV is going downhill due to their celebrity obsession. I very very much doubt that ITV will do something after reading my post. As far as I am concerned, there is no law against telling a television company what you think of their programming - as long as it's polite enough.

Oh - and regarding my ITV News comments: I was meaning to say how 'tabloidy' the format has become and how tacky at times - for instance that animation of Jacques Chirac and Tony Blair. Not something you would normally find on a news programme.
