I'm assuming the break-bumper now being used is for the Boat Race on Saturday which ITV1 are showing live. However, why do they feel the need to show it in letterbox format even on widescreen? I wonder what aspect ratio they have in mind for the actual broadcast?
Unfortunately 16:9 isn't the solution to everything - so even for those forking out a grand on a HD-widescreen TV, you're still going to get some films with the black bars.
It does annoy me on adverts though and music videos how they still add them to create the "widescreen effect" - generally it's unnecessary.

formerly CGI:Britain will start on April 6th at 10pm. What will replace Duel, is Beat the Star scheduled to start soon? I think Mr & Mrs will be given the 10pm Friday slot, once Al Murray has finished its extended run.
