I'm assuming the break-bumper now being used is for the Boat Race on Saturday which ITV1 are showing live. However, why do they feel the need to show it in letterbox format even on widescreen? I wonder what aspect ratio they have in mind for the actual broadcast?

It's the aspect ratio used in films for cinema, I'm guessing they wanted it in that style.

Unfortunately 16:9 isn't the solution to everything - so even for those forking out a grand on a HD-widescreen TV, you're still going to get some films with the black bars.

It does annoy me on adverts though and music videos how they still add them to create the "widescreen effect" - generally it's unnecessary.

I don't mind deep letterbox for movies. It gives it an "epic" feel. I'd much rather that than a pan-and-scan edit.

I don't give a rats ass about deep letterbox commercials as I try to avoid watching them.

Yep - letterboxing, even on 16:9 TVs, is still a visual shorthand for "cinematic", "dramatic", "epic" etc...

Primetime
Headcases formerly CGI:Britain will start on April 6th at 10pm. What will replace Duel, is Beat the Star scheduled to start soon? I think Mr & Mrs will be given the 10pm Friday slot, once Al Murray has finished its extended run.

I think Pushing Daisies will take the Duel slot - depending what you consider the Duel slot to be, but around 9pm.

I watched 321 when they repeated the 1987 series on FTN and found the whole thing confusing.

I think alot of people did when it was on first time round.

From when I've seen the Repeats it just looks really dated, no disrespect to the late Mr Rodgers or Mr Bin of course.
