I saw the end of Trial and Retribution today. I've never seen it but it looks like a superb, gripping, well-shot drama.

Anyway, the atmosphere was utterly spoiled with that DISGUSTING too tall, blue bar 'NEXT TIME' strap and then the blue bar credits.

Monstrous creations, saddening to see them still in existence. Let's hope Fincham as controller of ITV1 orders a total revamp of all presentation on the channel, abolishing these hideous creations forever.

I know the credits don't make the programme but it does add a sort of ... generic ITV feel to the show itself in my mind. It almost strips some of the originality away, somehow. I'm not sure, maybe it's just me.

Didn't the BBC1 much worse ECP start during Fincham's tenure at BBC1?

At least shows have free reign over their credits on BBC One.

Surely that wasn't Fincham's decision though?

You just can't bloody read them!

I agree with you completely though and really hope the "lower-fifth" style is adapted across the board, though it may need to be more like "lower-third" for other programming.

I sort of agree.

I do like the idea behind the ITV credits and do like a consistant look, though the blue bars are not nice, even the predessor worked well as they had colour, and movement but were dark enough in style, even though I was getting sick of them, they were a superior to the blue bars.

Surely to address this problem they should have a rule that all dramas use black background under credits, and bar 'next time', etc. bars to go along.

Looking at recent commissions such as the palace, could they be dropping the caption rules, and allowing them to do there own thing and it's just the fact that trial & retribution were made a while ago?

I do love these dark dramas, as in dark story and dark lighting, etc. They feel far closer to the quality American dramas than what was becoming the ITV norm of housewife with a secret.

To go back to the credits, I'm still not a big fan of the soaps credits, and I'd opt for a commissioning rule of any width of the screen, but in either the top or bottom half (whichever they decide, a mixture of both may look messy) so that the ECP's can drop in above/below the credits.

The other option is if they were the width of the screen in the middle that could be more up/down for promotions.

Another issue I'd been meaning to bring up, but it's been reported in the last couple of days ITV actually turned down Gladiators in favour of getting Simon Cowell to make a "modern" arena game show.

I'm not too sure about that - think it's destined for failure myself (anyone remember Simply the Best?) and Simon Cowell's productions so far have all basically been tweaks of American Idol.

Surely it would have been better to revive the original, especially knowing a revival was imminent, than instead order a rip-off. It doesn't even seem to have been the case that a new format had already been developed!

Yeah, I read that, and was thinking the same.

I don't exactly understand what its going to be, as surely any arena based one on one action will be exactly like gladiators. Unless he plans to put it on ice, and has never heard of Ice Warriors (was I one of the only people to think it was a good show, especially with the skill involved?).

Not sure it was a good show, but certainly a good concept - and with the success of Dancing on Ice anything's possible. Talking of revivals though as I mention in the Saturday Night Takeaway thread I think reviving You Bet with Ant and Dec wouldn't be a bad idea.

love what ITV did tonight!, axed Echo Beach repeat because of an extended NAT, ran the Moving Wallpaper repeat though.
The announcer then cut in over the credits to say, 'So there you are a little refresher before an all-new Moving Wallpaper tomorrow'
Did give a cursory mention to Echo Beach, but clear ITV don't want to go back to Echo Beach someday!

I don't like this generic "capture all things ITV" thread.

There was a day on this forum when the appointment of a new director of television would have it's own thread, not buried in a generic thread amongst talk of end credits, fantasy schedules and barcodes ramblings about non-camped up gameshows.

Why don't we just have done with it, create a single thread, call it "Television" and put the whole forum in it ?

I agree pad and they should also get rid of the awful coming later captions in the midde of episodes of Corrie and Emmerdale (and several other ITV shows). They bother me even more than the terrible blue end credits in a way as you are trying to give your full attention to the programme and they are very distracting.

I can see your point but isnt it better to have a thread like this for little things that wouldnt really need a thread of their own. e.g. saying a new series is starting next week at 9pm or that there was a new style trailer.

Individual ITV programme like Corrie, Emmerdale, Ant and Dec's Takeaway, News at 10 etc still have their own threads.
