Nick Hancock <snip> seemed to get the right amount of banter going between him and the contestants

I felt there was far, far too much chat and not nearly enough quiz.

I put up with it for the whole hour, in order to try to give it a fair chance, but I won't be back next week for any more.

If I tune in for a quiz, it's because I'm mainly interested in the questions; and couldn't care less about the inside leg measurement of the third contestant from the left.

I was similarly disinterested in the National Lottery "Quiz" they had Dale Winton doing on BBC One last year. He would take 3 minutes to ask a question, interspersed with banter, and it became frustrating.

I didn't watch the Hancock programme on ITV1 last night (other than catching it while channel surfing) but after your comment, Mr Harvey, I certainly won't be bothering to catch the whole thing. Rolling Eyes

Duel was awful. Credit should be given to Nick Hancock for trying to hold it together, but the game was just very boring. I, also, shall not be returning for more.

It did in my opinion verge on the edge of that sort of thing, but compared with other shows such as In it to win it, and Deal or No Deal to some extent, it wasn't anywhere near as bad

I thought Duel was quite pacey actuallly - they didn't attempt to fill the game time with pointless chatter, instead just letting us see what the contestants were thinking - and none of this talking through their thoughts either until they'd both answered, but even that was very minimal - and if there was little to discuss, they moved on quickly.

Then again, having had the misfortune of seeing a few minutes of In it to Win It before and the time they drag out each question, well that would even make a milk float look speedy!

Only thing with Duel I didn't get is why the jackpot rose with each chip lost - surely it makes sense to win more money the earlier you defeat your opponent.

The thing with Duel is...they have now showed a trailer with the jackpot going up and up - to over £180,000 I think. So that means that noone wins the jackpot in the 1st few round of the next programme - as they have already revelaed this by showing the size the jackpot rises to.

Can you see what I'm trying to say? Confused:

So in the week ITV have made a big song and dance about the return of News at Ten and their soap-free weekend line-up, I think it's worth pointing out that their total children's output this week amounts to the grand total of...

.... 20 minutes!!!

I know 5 hours a week is supposed to be on average, but even when you consider the programmes they screened in the middle of the night over Christmas there is no way they're hitting that average.

Surely as well as any average requirement, there needs to be a minimal requirement of 1-2 hours a week too.

Deary me. Brekkie, I hold my hands up - this revamp is falling on its arse.

Only the returning shows are doing well (Kingdom, Wild at Heart, Trial and Retribution) - everything else is failing miserably.

What now for ITV ...

In a week that has seen Duel start with just 3.2m agaist In It to Win It which had a ridiculously high 7.7m and the 1000th celebrity edition of The Weakest Link getting 4.5m, I don't know

It's not that programmes are good or bad just that most people aren't even bothering to tune in at least once to find out

They're even managing to do worse than I expected.

So true - Duel IMO is the best new gameshow format probably since Deal or No Deal arrived, but it just didn't have the audience around to get the figures it deserves - and that's why moving Dancing on Ice to Sundays is a big mistake. There is nothing anchoring the schedule.

It'll be interesting to see what the Dancing on Ice: Make me a Star spin off gets on Saturday and if that helps, but even that doesn't feel like the right sort of show for 8.30pm on a Saturday night.

The only night ITV1 can brand a "success" is Sunday, but really considering Sunday has always been a strong night for ITV1, I'm not sure it is. Certainly Kingdom is down a good couple of million viewers on last year - and there is bound to have been a knock on effect from not having it immediately following Wild at Heart, losing some of it's potential audience during the Dancing on Ice skate-off.

ITV2 seems to have remained unconsidered in this revamp too. Spin-offs have been ditched for the sake of it, ITV2 finds themselves screening their flagship talent show - American Idol - at the same time as ITV1 screen Dancing on Ice, while having Dancing on Ice on Sunday means they lose out on getting a quick repeat the next day. I doubt by 9.25am the next Saturday anybody would be too bothered if they'd missed Dancing on Ice last week.
