Slow start for The Palace - 4.3m. News at Ten - 3.8m.

Quite a poor start, and to think the BBC hasn't even pulled its big guns out yet!

I'm surprised The Palace did so poorly - I've still got it too watch, but was it more West Wing or Footballer's Wives?

I thought News at Ten would win the battle on it's first night anyway, though the BBC would inevitably win the war.

I was surprised at how well done News at Ten was- clear, authoritative and professional and without the ridiculous chatty palliness of BBC News, which, in comparison, seems incredibly smug and self-indulgent. ITN's set was much better than the BBC's, too. And when will Huw Edwards stop pretending to read from a sheet of paper on his desk (when trying to highlight a detail) ?

It was more Last Of The Summer Wine, if it got any slower it would have come to a halt.

I disagree. I thought The Palace was excellent - probably my favourite new drama. I hope ratings pick up though that is probably unlikely.

ITV1's revamp hasn't been quite as successful as hoped so far, there's clearly a lot more work to do though I would say ITV1 can expect a short-term ratings hit before things get better.

I still think the branding could be slightly refined to be more consistent - I think now's the time to remove all restrictions on ECPs apart from the fact that there needs to be space. So have two options for producers:

- Lower third credits in any style, ads and info appear on the top
- Centred credits in any style, scrolling or static, ads and info appear to the side

Producers decide what credits they have and what fonts, styles, backgrounds and colours to use. This way it looks like not everything is cut from the same cloth on ITV1, and adds a bit of variety to proceedings.

Ident wise, I would axe either the 'small logo' set or the 'big logo' set or at least edit them if possible to make them the same size (incidentally I feel the right size for the logo is somewhere in between the two sizes right now). The first set were better at revealing the ITV1 logo. Also, they really need to add some oomph to that music, it's so dreamy and dull, especially for the weekends which are supposed to be all exciting etc.

Well here I can make you look like the negative one by saying it's done a bit better than I thought it would! Both were inevitable though really. Laughing

As every year though, more new commissions will be flops than hits - just think how few are returning from last years slate - I can only think of Kingdom.

Anyone know how well Al Murray is doing on Friday nights? I've said before that ITV1 ideally should have shown their commitment to News at Ten by having it on five nights a week, and really by moving Al Murray to the Saturday 10pm slot, and the Saturday film to 10.35pm on Fridays, that could have been achieved quite easily.

The Palace was excellent. I throughly enjoyed last nights episode and will definately watch again next week. The gorgeous Rupert Evans as King Richard was just an added bonus Wink

I would agree that its the best drama out of the ones ive watched so far - Echo Beach/Moving Wallpaper I enjoyed but Honest was so crap I switched off after 5 minutes.

I am finding myself increasingly concerned with the new schedule. I do think ITV needs to act fast to save itself from terminal decline which is very near. What they've done on Weekends is fine but they need to boost the schedule elsewhere, but also cut down on the soaps - it's imperative now.

My idea:
http://www.gorillaenterprises.co.uk/upload/uploadFiles/itv1-schedule-more.gif

Main focus points:

- Corrie loses its second Friday episode, and stays at 19:30 Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with an extra at 20:30 on Monday.
- The Bill's Thursday episode moves to Saturday at 20:00.
- Emmerdale ditches its hour-special on Tuesdays.
- The Evening News moves to 17:30 and airs 7 days a week in this slot, with a fixed chat show arriving at 18:30 Monday to Friday.
- News at Ten every weeknight including Friday.
- Late Weekend News sticks to a 23:00 slot.
- With the exception of Tuesday, 22:30 is a chance to catch ITV2 shows that air at 21:00 again, the cream of ITV2 formats. On Fridays this slot is reserved for Dexter, Pushing Daisies etc.
- Tonight runs once a week on Tuesdays for an hour, which is a night of regional and factual programming (i.e. the graveyard day, allowing to plough more into Mon/Wed/Thu)

The Evening News is successful at 18:30 at the moment but I feel ITV could capitalise on the audience at this time who don't want to watch regional news or Hollyoaks. A new chat show would take its place; this would possibly be a permanent format with guest presenters every few weeks on rotation, perhaps, if they can't find a long-term solution. Golden Balls would also run in this slot in a 30 minute format (60 minutes is a lot of filler right now) - it would be there when the chat-show is off air.

I've also included Wheel of Fortune, something like that wouldn't be difficult to revive for once a week on Thursdays or so. And CGI UK would air at 20:00 Mondays, or Creature Comforts, 2DTV etc etc - something of variety.

Fridays should never try and be good again - aim for the 'definitely in' audience that watch Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Marple from 8pm. Scheduling Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach on Friday was a huge error on ITV's part.

The News at 530 would be a new bulletin, rebuilt from scratch like News at Ten, airing 7 days a week - that's its selling point, you always know it'll be on at half five (unless special circumstances disallow this!)

Finally these further tweaks would coincide with a complete refresh of the ITV1 branding! New idents on a similar theme to now, but with a bit more thought, the logo the same size and most importantly a decent soundtrack, with different scores for different moods! I'd commission about 8 new idents and a new trailer package, as well as loosen the ECP restrictions - producers get free will on fonts, sizes, colours and backgrounds but must create credits either centre scroll/static or bottom fifth in style, for ads to be overlayed.

That would do the trick, I feel!
