I don't think the new design has been revealed yet, but I've heard "a bit garish" and "possibly taking some cues from the London 2012 logo".

Oh, Metropol will be pleased.
As much as I disliked the 2012 logo, it grew on me, and has worked well, and may have changed the flexibility of Olympic/Paralympic logos for the future.
I'm not sure whether the ITVplc logo can be adapted to look "a bit garish", unless they are planning to rebrand as a cheap minor group of channels.

Indeed.
And, of course, anybody born after a certain year/date will have no memory of any pre-"ITV1" name for the channel.
So, as those of us who *do* remember regional names etc grow older and eventually die, the number of people who stubbornly never get out of the habit of using either an old regional name, or just "ITV" (without the "1") will gradually dwindle, over the coming decades.
I actually got into the habit of calling it "ITV1" very quickly when it first changed. I was born in 1980, so regional names were around for "only" the first 21 years of my life - which, in about another 10/11 years' time, will start to become a minority proportion of my lifetime. If I were still calling it "Central" (or whatever) by the time I'm aged 80, that would be ridiculous of me!
Just to add my small worth, I'm one of those people you mentioned. Meridian was a funny name for a news programme to me for many years until I found the idents online. For your information, I still refer to ITV1 as ITV - it rolls of the tongue far easier and is the natural name, although I would always call the BBC channels by their full name.
I think that we generally said "BBC" to mean BBC1 for many years. If we were talking about BBC2, we'd explicitly say "BBC2".
I think that "ITV" will be used colloquially all the time to refer to ITV1 by many people.
One of the reasons ITV became ITV1 was to draw attention to the fact that ITV now encompassed more channels (albeit unavailable for those who didn't have digital and that's a situation they don't really have to worry about any more).
Similarly, BBC tv was rebranded BBC1 to help to draw attention to the fact there was a BBC2 (albeit unavailable for those who didn't have UHF, a situation that lasted for some time).

January 14th, I'm told. I don't think the new design has been revealed yet, but I've heard "a bit garish" and "possibly taking some cues from the London 2012 logo".
Totally believable. It retains the tradition that each new ITV logo must be worse than the previous.
According to our own Sky Networks, the ITV "rebrand" is slated for mid-January.

Although I'd say that what we have now, bettered that which it replaced.

ITV plc announced today that it had acquired So Television, the independent production company behind hit entertainment and comedy programmes, including The Graham Norton Show and The Sarah Millican Television Programme.
