If there was only one ident, it would be more noticable, wouldn't it?
The ambience of which you speak is entirely appropriate. On The X Factor it is Peter Dickson's job to build excitement with the whole 'live from London' stuff and then introducing the judges. What you (and others) seem to want is the ITV announcer competing with him, instead of complementing him? You have to consider as well that ITV1 is a commercial TV channel, and mellow, ambient idents & announcements create a nice break between the increasingly attention-seeking adverts and big entertainment shows like The X Factor. This quiet gap between advert and programme means that Peter's introduction is more effective than it would be otherwise...
To be honest with you, I struggle to comprehend why some people don't get all of this. We have discussed it a million times on this thread over the years, and each time the discussion comes up I find myself getting increasingly frustrated that people cannot see it, as to me it is just obvious. Consequently, my posts can sometimes come across as quite kurt and/or incoherent, such is the intensity of the frustration that I feel. But hopefully this time it makes sense...
I'd argue there are signs to suggest on screen branding isn't as unimportant to ITV1 as some are perhaps making out. For a kick-off, why would they commission a set of 12 extravagantly produced idents if the ultimate intention was for them to be "samey and forgettable"? (no wonder Red Bee won the pitch /snideremark). A few basic pieces of film/animation could have achieved this at a fraction of the outlay spent on the current lot.

Branding can play an important role in establishing the tone for a channel; clearly this set was deemed appropriate for a mainstream primarily entertainment-focused station. I would disagree. I'll be straight with you, I'm not a regular ITV1 viewer but I've seen my fair share of X Factor/BGT junctions with the announcer trying admirably to build an appropriate atmosphere above the droning of a plodding soundtrack accompanying a woman bicycling through a dark street. It's a mis-match.
