I'd argue there are signs to suggest on screen branding isn't as unimportant to ITV1 as some are perhaps making out. For a kick-off, why would they commission a set of 12 extravagantly produced idents if the ultimate intention was for them to be "samey and forgettable"? (no wonder Red Bee won the pitch /snideremark). A few basic pieces of film/animation could have achieved this at a fraction of the outlay spent on the current lot.

If there was only one ident, it would be more noticable, wouldn't it?

Branding can play an important role in establishing the tone for a channel; clearly this set was deemed appropriate for a mainstream primarily entertainment-focused station. I would disagree. I'll be straight with you, I'm not a regular ITV1 viewer but I've seen my fair share of X Factor/BGT junctions with the announcer trying admirably to build an appropriate atmosphere above the droning of a plodding soundtrack accompanying a woman bicycling through a dark street. It's a mis-match.

The ambience of which you speak is entirely appropriate. On The X Factor it is Peter Dickson's job to build excitement with the whole 'live from London' stuff and then introducing the judges. What you (and others) seem to want is the ITV announcer competing with him, instead of complementing him? You have to consider as well that ITV1 is a commercial TV channel, and mellow, ambient idents & announcements create a nice break between the increasingly attention-seeking adverts and big entertainment shows like The X Factor. This quiet gap between advert and programme means that Peter's introduction is more effective than it would be otherwise...

To be honest with you, I struggle to comprehend why some people don't get all of this. We have discussed it a million times on this thread over the years, and each time the discussion comes up I find myself getting increasingly frustrated that people cannot see it, as to me it is just obvious. Consequently, my posts can sometimes come across as quite kurt and/or incoherent, such is the intensity of the frustration that I feel. But hopefully this time it makes sense...

After reading this post, I question why you even visit TV Forum if you think television idents are so meaningless.

I am able to appreciate that idents are pretty meaningless to most viewers. Rolling Eyes

Also, some members of the forum are more fond of certain presentional elements than other elements and vice-versa. I'm not fussed about normal idents but I am a fan of Christmas idents, theme tunes, news intros, etc. Conversely, you will find that some people are keener on idents than news intros.

Okay?

The notion ITV1 is an entertainment led channel is really only applicable on Saturday nights anyway. Most of the rest of the time it's soap, drama and cheap documentaries which fill the schedule - and the ident set works well enough across all genres really. I also think too if you remove the logo in most cases the logos are more recogniseable as being from ITV1 than many of the later BBC1 efforts would be, where the red branding which connected them all has pretty much been dropped.

ITV1 is not the issue. 2,3 and 4 need looking at.

Seen a few new ad styles recently. Particularly love the Perspectives season branding.

I agree, I think that the green & white on ITV2 looks rather dated! I do think that ITV1 needs a fresher face though! Very Happy

ITV2 shouldn't ditch the green and white but they do need to look at their overall presentation because some of it does look amateurish, e.g. the endboards. But ITV2 has a very strong identity and when they are good, they are really good, the "you know you want two" campaign being an example.

The trouble with the ITV2 branding in my opinion is the logo. It looks horrid when scaled down and when it is in a line with all of the other channels logos.

I don't see the need to always use the 3D slanted logo. When I first saw it, I assumed that would be use on the channel/print itself - and that the flat 2D version would be used when with the other channels or when it was more appropriate to use it.

I've never warmed to the 3D logo. I just don't see the point of it, really - the flat version did the job fine.

It reminds me of E4's original logo (below). Although ITV seem to have done it in reverse.

The 'Popstar to Operastar' titles are woeful. Even worse than last year.

I know. I couldn't quite believe how bad they looked.
