I've just been looking at the tv guide on the itv website, so for example I'm looking this thing about duran duran that's on, and there's a link for programmes I also might like, and they're all BBC programmes... why would they show up on the itv website?

You obviously missed that big news story a few weeks ago where the BBC, ITV, C4, S4C and C5 are sharing metadata on their catchup services. Whilst not actually using the individual players (I.e. you can't watch ITV or C4 programmes on BBC iPlayer), the links are there to take you to the ITV Player.
Doesn't look like this has been mentioned already - ITV to revamp its digital channels.

ITV to plough £6m into digital channels revamp
ITV’s new digital channels boss Angela Jain is to be handed a £6m war chest to dramatically improve branding and programming.
Chief executive Adam Crozier plans to use around a quarter of its £25m investment fund for online and digital this year, to help give the multichannel stations, including ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, a “cleaner, crisper identity”.
The cash boost will also feed into the programming budget, giving Jain more room to commission tailored content.
Crozier said: “It’s about clearer positioning, branding and improving the programming, so it is more appropriate for the branding of each channel.”
He said the digital portfolio, which also includes CITV, had made “fantastic progress”. ITV3’s share of viewing and commercial impact grew by 24% in 2010, while ITV2’s and ITV4’s increased by 3% and 17% respectively. But Crozier insisted that “more can be done in shaping them up and getting them right”.
ITV revealed earlier this week that Jain will take over from previous director of digital channels and acquisitions Zai Bennett. She will start early in the summer after steering E4 through a successful period. Hit shows included The Inbetweeners and Misfi ts as E4 was crowned Channel of the Year at the Broadcast Awards last month.
Jain will be expected to continue to build ITV2’s celebrity-led identity and refine ITV4’s male-skewing ambitions.
Sounds interesting. In terms of branding & Promotion, I think ITV3 needs the most investment. It's identity is still the same since 2006 when all other channels have re branded/amended their presentation at least once during the same period. ITV2 has the strongest brand of all ITV channels in my opinion at the moment. I still don't know if I like the ITV2 logo when presented with the other channel/brands logos, the same applies for the CITV logo, but for ITV2 their current sub branding works greatly, especially for the new selection of programmes and the correcting of tagline to what it should have been in the first place 'you know you want 2'.
Whatever they do, I hope they do it to strengthen the collective ITV brands rather than pushing them away as has been done in the past.
I would argue that ITV3 needs the least. It's identity is excellent and, with maybe a little tidying up of promos and so forth, could last a lot longer yet.

They need to either create individual logos for ITV3 and 4, or put ITV2 back to being 2D because it sticks out too badly on its own. But on the whole the ITV2 and 3 branding is fairly strong and suits the channels well, hopefully they'll aim for evolution rather than revolution.
But in my opinion the ITV1 branding is the worst, I understand the 'alive with yellow' concept but the real life idents just don't work. The Christmas CGI ones are far better, perhaps they should go down that type of route for the rest of the year. Hopefully that will soon be on their hit list.
