So for those who still think ITV is rubbish:

Compare those figures with BBC1's top ten programmes, the majority of which are around the 5m mark.

Also note the ITV2 repeats and programmes in the 'Satellite' category (which includes Freeview) - I can't see anything from the BBC on there, apart from EastEnders.

You can't just compare channels by that one measure! Taking a quick look at BARB for week ending 18th October, ITV have their usual good performance in the "Top 10", however, when looking at the bigger picture, BBC1 has a higher daily reach (49.1% against 41.4%), higher weekly reach (82.8%/78.3%), higher average weekly viewing time (5h35m/5h03m) and higher overall share (21.5%/19.4%).

Plus the BBC are less rubbish.

No-one is denying that ITV1 isn't the most popular channel, it has been for quite some time. I'm pretty sure ITV2 has been the most popular digital channel ever since it appeared on satellite too.

As others have pointed out - popularity doesn't mean quality. Also ITV's problem has never been to do with audience figures, it's the amount of income they can make from their high audiences which is the problem

Perhaps you should revise the differences between quality and popularity. Tesco Value medium sliced white bread is very popular. That doesn't mean it's better than its competitors.

That's a disappointing analogy, Mark. People buy Value because it's affordable to them - TV is free.

How do you measure quality anyway? Does Benidorm have a higher sodium content than Casualty?

But surely you just attempted to?

I was asking Mark how he measures quality.

The fact is that ITV1 is getting increasingly higher ratings, whereas under a 'something for everyone' model like the BBC's (which is what a lot of people seem to be suggesting ITV1 should be doing) it wouldn't be.

I was looking at two of my captures of the ITV1 Pavement Art ident and noticed something - in one clip (recorded in January) the ITV1 logo had shadows cast on it, in the second (recorded this week) it did not. Curious, I took two image captures of each ident and upon doing so realised that at some point during this year the aforementioned ident has been re-edited:

Any ideas why?

Jonny, I've been re-encoding some of my video clips, and I have recordings of both versions - from 2007. The ITV News Special - Britain's Biggest Bomb Plot, from 30th April 2007, was preceded with the edit without the shadows.

Television is anything but free.

Every tesco value loaf you buy pays for ITV, C4 and Five.

So it appears the ident was edited only weeks after its debut. I can't imagine why they would purposely use two near-identical versions of the same ident, therefore I can only assume that they failed to remove the original from the playout system and it has continued to appear in error?

I do.

You don't decide whether to watch BBC One or ITV1 based on how much it's going to cost you, as TV is free at the point of viewing.

Is that better?

I think Chie's right about that - you don't decide what channel to watch based on cost. At least, I don't.
