Why, when ITV are p***ing and moaning about not having any money and that the advertising isn't generating any revenue, do they go and show programmes in primetime without ANY commercials?

I've just been watching Piers Morgan's Life Stories, and there were breaks, but with only network promotion. I've seen this happen many times before - but why, when they're trying to make so many cutbacks, are they deliberatly not using lucrative advertising space?

Maybe they couldn't sell the space.

I think this due to the Advertising regulation, where there can only show X amount of mins per hour , and there would rather use them else where.

There's a limit to how many ads ITV can show in primetime isn't there? And I assume they used it all up during Dancing On Ice...

Oh... didn't know that.

Seems a bit of a silly regulation, for a commercial broadcaster. Especially when cable/satellite only channels can show the same sequence of nauseating adverts every 15 minutes throughout the entire day!

As others have said, they can only show 40 minutes of advertising in peak (6-11). If you have the maximum of 12 minutes in every hour it doesn't take a genius to work out you'd overload the peak period. So you put it whether it'll get the most money, meaning 6-7 and 10-11 are usually pretty light.

Which is of course something ITV want to change, but at the moment I think their proposal is rather than 40 minutes a night in peak time, they want to average 40 minutes a night over a week - so on nights where ratings are lower they'd be less ads, while on nights where ratings are higher they'd be more - possibly a maximum of 60 minutes if the full 12-minutes an hour is permitted - although there could still be an upper limit I guess.

Going off topic, but since Fiver started putting two breaks in it's Home and Away and Neighbours screenings, it would be interesting to know how it's affected the price of a slot to advertise within the programme, as you'd think the more slots available, the cheaper they would be.

The amounts of ads hasnt changed

Quote:
Another issue featuring highly in the inbox this week has been the introduction of an extra advert break during Home And Away and Neighbours on FIVER. We’ve changed the structure of the breaks (there’s no longer one in between the two programmes), and over the course of the evening we’re not showing any more adverts than we used to. However, the advertisers understandably want the spots in our most popular programmes. While Martin Lewis would be proud of us, we realise not everyone appreciates the change and we have been logging all your comments regarding the new break structure for the advert bods.

Hate to break it to you but in the bigger picture noone cares about late ITV local news especially not on a Friday night.

I don't know what you are talking about, the local news is moving with the national news 1 hour earlier, its in the same length slot every night
