It doesn't have to be 'another' episode - simply move the second Friday episode back to its (rightful) place on Sunday evenings. You're right that ITV shouldn't be relying on two or three programmes, but the current situation is they only have a handful of bankers and it's no good having two episodes of its top rating soap on a Friday night making little difference to the ratings of whatever follows, whilst on Sundays we have Britannia High and Heartbeat sinking without a trace.
They need to admit defeat and move Corrie back. Emmerdale doesn't need to return - it's having problems of its own at the moment anyway, with The One Show closing the gap between the two. Snapping at its heels as it were.

I still think Emmerdale should become an hourly format moved to
7pm Tuesday and Thursday only, it would also help free up space
The problem with the relaunched schedule is that it was built around shows and not shows placed around a schedule. It was initially a success and not a problem because the specific programmes had been tailored for that schedule but as we seen around March, the whole thing fell apart when most shows came to an end. Every night of the week they
need
a show to anchor the schedules, even if its just to boost otherwise flagging shares. They made a huge mistake by getting rid of Emmerdale/Coronation Street/Heartbeat because that rated very well. The focus was to fix where they are failing, not ruin that.
There are rumours that Corrie will need to move from next autumn when Champions League matches take up residence on Wednesdays
I'd forgot about that - it'll certainly be back on Sundays from next autumn at the latest then.
Really nearly a year on we're back to square one - with the added disaster of ITV getting trounced on Sunday nights. The weekday schedule is still rather uninspiring, the 9pm dramas still aren't working and the schedule still feels soap dominated, which especially with Emmerdale and The Bill are virtually at an all time low ratings wise.
Talking of low ratings and relaunches though, anyone heard if Duel has been recommissioned. It was definately one of the best new shows in the ITV relaunch, but didn't rate too greatly at all - though considering now 5m is pretty much a hit, the 3m or so Duel got didn't seem too bad in hindsight. I'm doubting it has, but I do hope it'll get a second chance.

The only shows I know for sure that have been recommisioned are;
Moving Wallpaper (not Echo Beach tho)
The Fixer
Primeval (which I think will have a longer run this time)
Obviously the regular stuff like Dancing on Ice, You've Been Framed etc will be back too.
