I suppose the problem that ITV have is do they heavily schedule Christmas Day or just fill it with the soaps and Midsummer Murders?

If I was running ITV then I would go with the latter

I know people will say 'If ITV showed something half decent then viewers would tune in' but I don't think this is the case, hour long soaps and new drama would be classed as ratings winners at any other time

Harry Hill's TV Burp aired last year and underperformed, brand new Midsummer would be a hit at any other time, lackluster episodes of the likes of My Family on BBC1 gets about 3m more than they would at any other time, plus of course there is the Christmas Day EastEnders situation

It's best for ITV to show any major highlights on the other days

Maybe they should try a Christmas edition of The X Factor where a load of past contestants perform Christmas hits. The judges vote for who is the winner of that show and the winner wins nothing. I know it would be criticised for being a load of cheap rubbish with no point, but BBC1 have been trotting out SCD specials for years now

it will be interesting to see what ITV come up with for Christmas Day this year. I am not expecing anything different to the usual hour long episodes of Corrie and Emmerdale plus the News and films/2 hour drama in peak time.

It would be nice if they did show the Dancing on Ice Special on Christmas Day - possibly between the Emmedale and Corrie episodes. e.g;

6.20pm News
6.30pm Emmerdale
7.30pm Dancing on Ice
8.30pm Corrie
9.30pm Film

I'd be surprised if ITV put biggies such as Dancing on Ice on Christmas Day - they always throw in the towel against the BBC on the big day when they will no doubt be showing Doctor Who, Eastenders and Strictly.

Considering how poor and predictable the BBC's Christmas Day line up is nowadays (Doctor Who, EE, Strictly, 1970s comedy revival) it would be great for ITV to tackle them aggressively with a more entertainment led schedule.

Dancing on Ice is the obvious choice, but I think the best chance would be a Britain's Got Talent special performance, especially considering many of the acts don't really get the chance at much further TV exposure.

Interesting idea about the Britain's Got Talent thing, a bit like a royal variety?

Didn't ITV try and take on the BBC in 2003, didn't they go with creature comforts such programmes? Also the year that they had their most creative and overall best Christmas package in my opinion since the merger and nationwide ITV1.

Just spotted another new ident on ITV2 - I don't know how long it's been used. It's much in the same vein, I suppose, as Channel 4's 'Tokyo' ident - looking like Piccadilly Circus in the brief glance I got of it.

Okay, not quite Piccadilly Circus! The names of ITV2 shows and the logo are part of the shopfronts and on the sides of the buildings.

Hasn't this been in use for a couple of months?

Maybe - but the last ident to air that was noted in this thread was the 'Couple' ident back at the end of September with the nail-polish ident shortly before it. I'd not seen this one mentioned anywhere yet and presumed it was a recent launch.

I think I first saw 'Neon City' or whatever it's called, around early to mid October.

Britannia High - 2.5m, Heartbeat 4.7m.
Antiques Roadshow - 10.1m, Strictly - 9.5m

Time for Mr Grade to admit his big idea for Sundays was a mistake - next he'll be letting BBC1 win Wednesday nights too!

Oh great, more tedious plugging for the wonderful Britannia High to follow then. Rolling Eyes

Have you got ITV1's ratings for Saturday or later Sunday evening as well? Wink
