I'm a novice to freeview as i've been with sky since 1998.
This itv teletext, why doesn't it work when GMTV is on? Wait, is Nick Harvey gonna say its already been talked about it, or is he going to do those stupid train pictures... BINGO!!!.. hey.. your needed mate, might of won somthing worth over 50p.

Anyways, wasn;'t this the same at one point with regards to teletext with Oracle when TV-am was one. Its a bit baffling as i like to get the latest news in a morning, I don't have an anologue teletext tv anymore and a freeview box.. but can't see digital teletext. Whats going on?

GMTV is a service, not a programme. So when you're watching it, you're not watching ITV 1 (or Scottish / Grampian / Channel / UTV) - instead you're watching a totally different channel.

At 6am and 9.25am there is a transmission switch to their control.

They don't carry ITV digital text, and don't support other ITV branded services, such as ITV.com (they have their own url gm.tv)

But it must be pointend out that 75% of that sevice is owned by ITV PLC.

It's a seperate service but comes from the same facility that broadcasts ITV1 during the day.

If you want Teletext on ITV aren't you better off switching to either ITV3 or ITV News, as they're the only ITV channels not to carry GMTV on them.

I remember the dispute a few years ago when GMTV used to block ITV News on DTT from 6.00am until 9.25am because they hadn't sorted out a deal with ITV for them to buy that space off them, but luckily it was sorted out soon enough. The same happened with the defunct ITV Sport Channel, but they never opened up earlier than 9.30am anyway.

Aswell as that, ITV Sport didn't broadcast at all to NI, because Carlton and Granada couldn't reach a deal with UTV to broadcast it in their space.

UTV also used to allocate GMTV2 it's own separate LCN (AFAIK, it was still on the same stream as UTV2 though), rather than just let it operate on channel 6.

There's no switch at all in fact, GMTV simply comes in as a studio feed to ITV transmission control in The London Television Centre, as would any other studio output or output from another region. In fact, the whole teletext insertion continues, but Teletext's system is programmed to show a 'Not available during GMTV' banner whilst GMTV is on. As said above, it's purely contractual, and if the deliberate block wasn't switched on, then Teletext on ITV1 would continue to be transmitted during GMTV.

In fact, it has been reported before that on-screen graphics have mistakenly been added during GMTV from ITV1 TX control - there was once a screengrab posted (on this very forum) of an ECP mistakenly being cued up during an adbreak in GMTV, and I'm fairly sure the 'Subtitles' bug that appears at the start of news bulletins on GMTV is the standard ITV1 Subtitles bug and is inserted in the same way and at the same stage as during 'normal' ITV1.

I'm suprised that ITV haven't bought Teletext plc given that they're losing money so shouldn't be too expensive. This would allow ITV to get a better slot on the Freeview EPG for ITV 3. And they'd gain a bit of bandwidth for ITVi on Freeview. They would then cut costs by merging ITVi and Teletext plc.

Also suprising is that ITV haven't done some sort of share swap with Disney to get the other 25% of GMTV.

It'll probably take these two things to happen before this problem is fixed.
