Rumours of later GMB and longer This Morning? (August 2019)

If they do that, it will be only : GMB between 6 and 9 for example, with Charlotte on her own for the 1st 30mins. I'm sure they won't add a new name just for this.

I did just post this in the GMB thread... but just for clarity i’ll post it in this one too.

One of the questions in the Viewback discussion was for our views on seeing the presenters of the following programme being ‘more interactive’ with the previous presenters - presumably providing a more seamless transition of programmes.

Also, just some further clarity on the news half hour - that one of the questions asked for our views as they intended for the half hour to be presented solely by Charlotte Hawkins.

The way it sounds, maybe they want a cross-over like the one between GMB and Lorraine, where the GMB presenters hand to Lorraine, who teases what's on her show, then goes to a break. The only difference would be, coming back from a break, the following programme would still be preceded by an ident.
Just a theory.

I don’t see why it would need to be branded anything specific? Keeping it the same adds weight to the idea that a GMB show can do both straight news and the fluffier stuff. And being presented by a recognised GMB name all but rules out any thought that this would be ITN produced/branded.

The interaction question is an interesting one, I always think it makes live shows flow much better (unless you try talking to a pre-recorded clip Very Happy ) but I don’t know how well it works when you’ve got sponsorship bumpers to think of? Presumably the same as GMB -> Lorraine where there’s a handover, what’s coming up then ads, sponsorship, titles? Repeat for This Morning, maybe removing the ident.

All very speculative anyway, we don’t know how advanced these plans are, if at all.

The biggest shock will be mums seeing Piers at half 8.

Surely the concept of a post-school run show for mums is rather outdated.

This threads took a bit of a turn into fantasy/wild speculation and scrolling on Wikipedia. This seems to be very much at an idea stage at this point and since ITV are still looking at new productions for 9:25 it’s just one possible option. The benefits of doing the time slot rejig are clear 1) They can give Piers’ Golden 15 minutes extra exposure when more people are awake 2) It pleases ‘news’ fans - those people who don’t want to hear Piers’ latest ‘outrage’ can catch up with the news in what seems to be an extended format* 3) They close a gap at 9:25 where so far nothing’s doing as well as JK did 4) This Morning being extended is hardly noticeable, it’ll just mean an extra guest or they’ll definitely have a cookery or fashion segment where they don’t have one every single day as it stands. 5) Schedule after 10:30 is as normal, meaning the change is minimal with the exception of Lorraine really.

This Morning has of course been extended before - in the revamp in 1998 which saw the end of the 9.25 quiz and what was then Vanessa moving there, This Morning began at 10.10, and indeed for a while there was a five minute preview in the schedules at 9.25. But after a while Trisha was extended and This Morning moved back to 10.30. And of course for a while, after Twiggy and Coleen's reign of terror had been a disaster, This Morning ended at twelve for a bit because the last half hour was being thrashed by Bargain Hunt.

As for the early "hard news" bit, that might have been viable in the past but surely not now. Surely nobody these days is tuning into Good Morning Britain these days expecting straight news, if they want that they can go to Breakfast or Sunrise. It had a point two decades ago when Breakfast News was comptely indigestible, but surely not now. That's a market that's already completely sewn up.

I think the general point again is that if ITV daytime has been relying on so few brands that when one goes they're just going to make the remaining ones longer, things have got to a pretty pass. Presumably this will continue until there's just one programme from 6am to 2pm. As mentioned, if nothing else you would assume they'd want to continue the benefits of having a show produced outside London five days a week.

I don't recall how many years ago ITV's lunchtime news moved to its current 1:30pm-2pm slot, but as that is the absolute latest half-hour of the day which could possibly just-about be described as "lunchtime" it somehow feels kind of too late for a "Lunchtime News" programme.

In a long-past era, it was on at 12:30pm-1pm, which to my mind seems better. I suppose the downside to ever moving it back to 12:30pm nowadays would be the large news-less gap between 1pm and 6pm, since the short mid-afternoon bulletin that once existed somewhere in the 3pm-3:30pm part of the day has long-since gone.

I guess that at least its current slot is a reasonable "mid-way" (ish) between the end of GMB at 8:30am and the start of the 6pm news hour, whilst avoiding a direct clash with Auntie Beeb's 1pm news.

I have always thought the news at 1.30 has been a terrible slot, I don't know why they don't move it back to 12.30. When I was a student I always used to watch the 12.30 news, it fitted right into my "schedule".

For a start This Morning and Loose Women are incredibly similar and go on about all the same topics, and they're right next to each other. In addition, Loose Women is always beaten by Bargain Hunt, so all that happens is that the audience go straight from This Morning to Bargain Hunt, and when that's finished Loose Women is already halfway through so nobody bothers turning over and sticks with the news on BBC1. And then when that's finished, there's no point turning over to ITV because the news is just starting, which you've just seen.

Whereas, if you did the news at 12.30, it's a more effective use of the slot because they have to do the news so it's an obvious alternative to Bargain Hunt and doesn't have to win its slot. And then at 1pm, if Bargain Hunt viewers are trying to avoid the news, ITV are then starting a programme to catch them. And they're not talking about all the same things as This Morning straight after This Morning has talked about them.

The other point is that at 1.30 the news can't help looking out of date.

Yes, I always felt Loose Women made more sense at 1pm as an alternative to the news for exactly the reasons you say.

I am glad someone has edited the ITV Lunchtime News page on Wikipedia to remove the sentence that it was confirmed it would be moving to 12.30pm from Monday 2nd September 2019.

Whenever news arises of potential changes to scheduling we all play fantasy schedules but the truth is we simply don't know what will happen yet.

It categorically isn't.
