ITV Daytime reshuffle

Rumours of later GMB and longer This Morning? (August 2019)

Hang on, are ITV considering bringing back the Morning News, which they axed in 2012? They axed it for a reason, it was a pointless bulletin, I don't see how it being at 6.00am will do any good if they are thinking of bringing it back. Just what ITV need, a repackaged News at Ten bulletin from the previous night at 6.00am.

I don't think it'll be a rehash of the ITV Morning News. I think it'll be a clearer split. GMB News may be a pure bulletin with the 6.30-9 slot focused more on interviews, analysis etc.

GMB News at 6.00am followed by Piers and Susanna at 6.30 - this would mean they might use a different desk or sofa area for the 30 minute news, if GMB will produce it and it is not an ITN production?

I don't know tbh. Quick if stupid question. Who provides the news for GMB. Is it ITV News/ITN or someone else a'la TVAM?

I think people are getting a little carried away. They aren’t going to bring back an ITN-produced bulletin when they already have a news gathering team and crew there ready to go for GMB.

Likely result will be Charlotte Hawkins presenting GMB solo for half an hour, with Piers’ Golden 10 Minutes(ish) then starting at 6.30 or even 7 and getting a bigger audience. If anything I’m surprised that’s not happened already.

Seems likely.

GMB provide their own news using the ITV News branding, which you see on screen. I was told by someone who works at ITN that they provide any resources GMB need for their news, but only if GMB ask them too, otherwise it is left up to GMB to provide their own news coverage.

They do that in Australia with Sunrise where they have an early bulletin just before the main programme, not sure if they do that for Today.

Starting at 6.30 would work but I don't think the ratings would increase massively.

I don't recall how many years ago ITV's lunchtime news moved to its current 1:30pm-2pm slot, but as that is the absolute latest half-hour of the day which could possibly just-about be described as "lunchtime" it somehow feels kind of too late for a "Lunchtime News" programme.

In a long-past era, it was on at 12:30pm-1pm, which to my mind seems better. I suppose the downside to ever moving it back to 12:30pm nowadays would be the large news-less gap between 1pm and 6pm, since the short mid-afternoon bulletin that once existed somewhere in the 3pm-3:30pm part of the day has long-since gone.

I guess that at least its current slot is a reasonable "mid-way" (ish) between the end of GMB at 8:30am and the start of the 6pm news hour, whilst avoiding a direct clash with Auntie Beeb's 1pm news.

Des and Mel were still at 1:30pm well into the 00s, so I’m going to assume it was around 2009/10.

I think it had moved by the yellow car park era which was late 2009. It was around 2005 it was extended to an hour and aired 12.30-1.30, then moved to 1.30 when cut back to 30 minutes.

This is where relying on year round programming really doesn't help in this situation compared to having different series across the year (or indeed across the week). Once a gap opens up you're starting from scratch.

I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

Yes, because they did not put in any reference source.
