Has any one else noticed the rubbish video & audio quality of the ITV coverage and the crowd noise has been suppressed,?

Yep - very very noticeable on ITV1 HD on Freeview today during Spain v Italy - commentator very faint and crowd noise very flat, like it was coming out of a toilet.

I presume that means you've heard commentary coming from your toilet before.

I have only watched the England game as I am not a big football fan but I noticed the picture quality did not look great even in HD.

The audio seemed OK to me but then as I don't watch football normally I guess I wouldn't know if sounds better normally.

I forgot toilet commentators were part of the Virgin Media XL package - carry on.
