That DOG was used throughout the day when the 8:30pm Wednesday episode started. Seems to be more promotion for other days.

I hate programme promo DOGs, bad enough when the smaller channels do them, ITV2's coloured Celebrity Juice and Love Island DOGs are horrible too. It's just tragic when the main channel has to do them too. IMO. Does this sort of promotion make any difference to ratings?

Don't hold your breath for new Christmas idents. ITV have a poor history of Christmas idents. We are lucky we have the 2013 ones reused each year. In 2006 and 2007 they did nothing apart from trailers, then in 2011 they had the normal idents with the Text Santa mascot sitting on it. Very festive seeing it sit on the logo with a summer ident background used if I remember right in 2011.
ITV along with Channel 4 and BBC 2 seem to really not care about Christmas ident changes each year. BBC 2 reused their 2007 Christmas ident right up until 2011, then resued the new 2011 to 2016. Channel 4 will keep what they introduced in 2015.

I question the promotional strategy. Corrie is a well-established programme, that gets millions of bums on seats easily. Unless this could have been a test? Usually, you would do this for new shows or want to hype up the return of a show.

Presumably it's budget cuts to the presentation departments over the years that prevents new Christmas pres. During the 90's BBC 1 & 2 received a new package each year, ITV created a different package each year for the network that was seen on trailers and adopted by some regions. Up until the square logo Channel 4 did something different each year too.
At least Channel 4 now do something, within the previous branding we just received the snowman & snowdog ident (and that was towards the end of the package's life) even though their were many possibilities.
Channel 5 was a let down last year, possibly the first year where they've never used Christmas pres.
As for ITV, as I mentioned earlier in the thread I'd love to see something new for the main channel, or even some new festive additions and maybe something festive with the logo, or something totally unique and away from the day to day idents. I'd love to see something for ITV2 too.
Could the lack of Christmas pres or day to day pres/exciting pres be:
A) Down to the costs required to make decent idents these days
B) because presentation budgets include trailers that are much more ambitious these days rather than clipping down an episode and adding a caption.
