Most TV channels have dropped the 1 because it's unnecessary for networks to line up with their other channels. Most people just call it "ITV" anyway regardless if the 1 is there or not. The only brand that hasn't dropped the 1 is Sky. Although, it wouldn't really make sense if they dropped it.

There always been called that, it would be pointless changing now. Mind you alot of people still say on Granada or HTV or if your famous and are in Kent house you say LWT.
But in ITV's case, 'ITV1' didn't mean anything in the viewer's conscience and didn't stand out against the competition (especially online). A brand reset, basically.

IIRC, I came across this video a few years ago - and ITV at the time used the likes of their services including ITV2 and the ill-fated Sport Channel to partly justify the name change - ‘more than just a TV channel’.
I don’t think it’s changed the perception of most viewers - they would still just call it ITV.
And let’s face it - the current ITV branding is not only stronger, but it also extends to an ITV that is far more stable than it was a decade ago, or even 15 years ago (especially with the failure of ITV Digital, the merger, and financial difficulties during the recession, to name a few).
ITV1 didn't and still didn't mean anything, the core name ITV was pretty much the "first" by default, having been beamed into homes at various points between 1955 and 1962 depending on where you were. When ITV2 came along it was implied by the name that that was a sister channel belonging to ITV, you didn't need to change the main name to ITV1 to imply that. BBC One is only BBC One because of the launch of BBC Two, for example.
Of course how you use your core name tends to help massively, Channel 4 had success with this and the likes of FilmFour, E4 and More4, whereas ITV went down the somewhat lazy route I suppose of just incrementing the numbers for ITV3 and ITV4, later copied to a degree when BBC Choice and Knowledge were relaunched.

The only brand... apart from the BBC, BT Sport and RTE

Some people still call the channels by their now defunct regional identifiers. A social media post on my Facebook feed TODAY mentioned a local charity being filmed by HTV Wales.
