I think a standard itv ident for news should be introduced and also introduce the names of the presenters on the 6pm regional need regardless if it is not the usual presenters. It always introduces Granada Reports with Tony and Lucy when they present together but if someone else presents it just says Granada Reports in the North West.

At the moment they do have different versions as they try to match it up with the announcer who is actually on shift and who has just read the menu immediately before.

Would it be preferred to do away with that, have one announcer every night, but get them to record a few more presenter announcements for the most regularly seen combinations. (Partnerships that appear week in week out on a Friday for example)

The current arrangement is fine and absolutely sensible - nobody is going to make their decision on whether to continue watching based on whether the presenters are name checked or not. Indeed up until a year or so ago they didn't even bother with any ident leading into the bulletin.

Bit of a dismissive statement on a forum like this where the finer detail of continuity is its bread and butter.

I'm going to have to agree with Brekkie, I work in continuity, sometimes the finer detail might involve a lot of work (logistics) just for something minor. I.e. If its a pre-recorded announcement, you'd need to enter this into the broadcast database, make sure the scheduler is using the right version/making sure that the file has delivered to TX.

The regional idents are played out with the opening titles, and they already pick the correct announcer and either named presenters or generics they probably have a dozen of versions already.

I've noticed a few times when the announcer before the 6pm local news is different to the main announcer during that particular evening.

Surely the announcer on shift has time to pre record specific announcements for that day's presenters, referencing any on location presenting etc, during the afternoon while a programme is playing out? Not much different to the individual throws to the regions GMB did at the beginning.

Remember the early days of National ITV continuity in 2002? Apart from the two live announcers covering early and late shifts there was also a third announcer who just recorded all the regional continuity for each day including the news intros. Saying that in 2002 there would still have been more local daily opt outs for programmes particularly in the afternoon.

To be honest though the current system works ok and IMO it seems a wasted exercise - for many years there was no announcement into the news just straight into titles after a 'menu announcement'. Its a nice effort to have a touch of regional continuity but its not essential.

I don't really see the point of having a continuity announcement into the news anyway. All it does is tells you the names of the presenters - who can be captioned, or just introduced verbally , and the name of the channel... which is in the title of the programme anyway

You could apply that argument to lots of junctions though.

Only the ones before the news. I can't think of anything else with the channel name in the title
